  Alias: The /Younger/ Charles, from the beginning, was always intended to succeed his father, Charlemagne. He often accompanied his father, and evenled some of the forces in the Saxon campaign in 783-784. He spent Christmasin 800 at Rome when his father was crowned Emperor to be coronated king himself. Charlemagne's will of 806 set up equal divisions of his Empire for his children, Charles, Pepin, and Louis. Louis was the only one that out-livedtheir father. Charles died of a stroke in December 811, a little over two years before his father.[91502.ftw] Charles, from the beginning, was always intended to succeed his father, Charlemagne.
