Notes

The 1820 census shows that Samuel Oliphant and wife had a large, growing family. Four daughters, Harriet, Elizabeth, Araminta and Adeline had been born. Sons, John Dickson and James Jackson Oliphant were also part of the family. Soon to be born is Hardin T. Oliphant. Hardin born in 1821, was the last child of Samuel and his first wife. Between 1821 and 1825, Mrs. Oliphant died, leaving a grieving husband and six small children. On November 3, 1825, Samuel Oliphant, age 50, married Tabitha Charter, age 29 in Davidson County, TN. Samuel's eldest daughter, Harriet is 20 years old at this time and married to Booker Charter. Perhaps Tabitha and Booker Charter are closely related? (Tabitha and Booker, it turns out, are brother and sister.) Historic Maury, Vol. XXXIX, No. 2, June 2003. A Publication of the Maury County Historic Society. Using the documentation from this publication, I am splitting this family back to the way it belongs, putting the children with the correct mothers. Year of birth determined by 1825 Census with age 50 confirming 1775 birthdate.
