Description: from "Families of Southern Maryland" volume 5, p.220-221
James Moore, Sr.
This James Moore appears to have had the distinction of living a longer life than most, if not all, other settlers who arrived in Maryland in the 1600s. In 1735 he signed his name as "James Moore ye 110." At first glance, one might suspect this is either a mistake or "ye 110" has some meaning other than his age. However, records appeard to prove quite conclusively that he really did achieve this ancient age of c110 years.
It is impossible to determine when and how this James Moore, identified as James Moore, Sr., by 1735, entered the Province since there was not only an abundance of Moores who arrived in the 1600s but there was more than one James Moore.
This James Moore lived some 40 years at 'Four Hills', had 2 wives during the last 15 years and probably another wife or wives and other children in the early years.
James Moore, Sr., bc1624; d.c.1735; m/1_____; m/2 by 1681 Elizabeth _____; m/3 by 1697 Mary _____; children:
1. James Moore, Jr. b.c1646
2. Mary Moore
3. Jane Moore
4. George Moore
5. Peter Moore
6. Benjamin Moore, b.1712
Circumstantial evidence suggests he was the James Moore who obtained a 200 acres warrant in 1670/1 and used part of it on 15 Mar 1670 to patent 11 acres on the east side of Patuxent River and south side of Land's Creek in Lyons Creek Hundred, Calvert Co. called 'Sneaking Point'; [poss'd by Elisha Hall]; resurveyed 26 Nov 1730 (Patent Book 13.83 & 16.177 & CaCRR). As James Moore of Calvert Co., carpenter, he patented the following lands in Calvert Co. which the Heinton Map shows to have been in the portion which became Prince George's Co.; also included is land shown by later deeds to have been patented by him in Prince George's Co. This list does not include 'Dunbar', patented at an unknown date.
22 Feb 1671 'Four Hills' 400 acress (33/165)
23 Sep 1680 'Moorefields' 150 acres (28/87)
8 Mar 1680 'Beals Hunting Quarter' 300 acreas (24/300;29/169)
22 Feb 1682 'Leith' 500 acres (24/393'38/7)
6 Mar 1681/2 'Horse Race 300 acres (24/396;32/146)
7 Mar 1681 'Defence' 150 acres (24/397;31/20)
2 Jul 1685 'Potterne Wake*' 203 acres (25/169;32/156)
30 Aug 1694 'Moore's Little Worth' 40 acres (27/144)
11 Sep 1694 'Child's Portion' 227 acres (27/242)
10 Nov 1695 'Moore's Addition' 231 acres (37/160)
1 Apr 1702 'Moore's Croft'* 123 acres (CD4/84;DD5/76)
1704 'Partnership' 500 acres (CD4/153)
10 Dec 1714 'Barbadoes' 150 acres (EE6/212;RY1/322)
[*Wake is found in other records as Weeke, Wick, Wicke, etc. also Croft is found as Craft in some records]
The following are only a few of the records available which verify the names of two of his wives and part of his land sales:
16 Jun 1686; James Moore sold 'Leith' of 500 acres on the west bank of the Patuxent in Calverton Manor
to William Selby; obtained from a 1000 acre warrant assigned from Ninian Beall dated 6 Jan 1681; surveyed
