Per the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for Tawas City, Iosco County, Michigan, Clarence is the youngest of 3 siblings (an older sister and an older brother). Neither his father's nor his mother's is listed in the census; however, his father's birth place was listed as Illinois and his mother's birth place was listed as New York State.
Clarence and his siblings are listed as living on First Street in Tawas City with their grandparents Rudolph and Mary Stark, both immigrants from Germany.
Clarence is next found in ancestry.com at the time of his enlistment on 21 January 1943 into the United States Army as Private. Although the place of enlistement is listed as Kalamazoo, his actual residence is listed as Alpena. He is listed as having completed one year of high school education and his civilian occupation is listed as being that of a "firemen, other than process firemen".
