      The Will of Otis Gilbert of Compton, Marldon, Devon was dated 16 May 1545 and proved on 16 June 1547[1] named his children Humphrey, Adrian, Otho and Katherine.[2]He made his 'brother' Philip Penkevell an executor and gave to him the keeping of Humphrey and Adrian, until they came of age. Penkevell was a Cornish squire who was Otho Gilbert's step-brother. Their mother had been a Cornish heiress and Penkevell, who acted as steward for Gilbert, was a substantial man, holding the manor of Padstow at his death in 1562, by which time Humphrey was well over 21.[3]

      1551/52: Pre-nuptial settlement, Boscorne, Bodmin:[5] John Hore, son of Richard Hore, to marry Kateryn, daughter of Philip Penkevell before purification of Blessed Virgin Mary if the laws of the Church shall permit; Richard to make sufficient estate in law of lands and tenements to yearly value of 10 marks for John and Kateryn, Richard to have property for life; Philip Penkevell to make sufficient estate in law of lands and tenements to yearly value of 30 shillings for John and Kateryn, also to pay John Hore £40, part on the wedding day, rest one year later and to apparel Kateryn according to John Hore's degree and to give John and Kateryn sufficient meat and drink over two years and the house of Babel Gilbert, Philip, Penkevell's mother, at Boscorne if they choose to take it, 16 January 1551.

      24 Oct 1562: Inquisition post mortem of Philip Penkevell esquire (died 1 Aug 1562), taken before Hugh Trevanyon, esquire the escheator.[6] Jury say he died siesed of:

      Padstow manor, held of Roger Prideaux;
      One third Bodannen manor, with lands in Nether Tympethy, Lewene, Tregaveren, Trewether, moiety of Gonan manor with lands in Nether and over Gonan and Treguaret, held of John Trevelyan's Trewenek manor,
      One quarter Tresperret manor with lands in Henett, Underton, Tremorell, Hoggesland, Treburtell and Dunheved, held of John Trelawny's Treglasta manor,
      One quarter Tregarryck manor with lands in Tregarryck, Tresees, Trefrank, Tregoss, Belowsa, Rosemellyn, Chapell Park, Roche, Hendra, Carbons, Tregenhaye, Tregoss mill, Pendene, Goeneglos;
      lands in Rosorowe, Carlythian, Kyerowe, Tregollyn, Amble-eglos, Tintagel, Trevena, Fursdon, Wester Lamana, Treverowe, Treviscar, St Columb higher, Bospolvan, St Columb lower, Menevals, Trethynyck;
      One third of one quarter of Trenoweth wood, Coysyn chase, Kelevreth, Kelycor and Sevyack;
      Rosorow and Tregollyn, held of queen's manor of Penpont
      Philip Penkevell died 1 August 1562; inquisition 24 October 1562.

      Philip was buried on the 1st of August 1562 at St Minver.
