    • Biography

      Michael was born in 1796[1]. His parents were Johann Schulke and Elisabeth Catharine Barts. All records of this family were in Polish and the family spoke, read and wrote in Polish.

      He married Marie Reinke in 1841 in Poland. Her birth year is estimated from the Prussia Poland church marriage record where it states Maria was 26yrs old estimated birth of 1815 and Michael estimated birth year 1796 at age 45.[2]

      Michael and Marie had at least 5 children and wonderusly four of the children were born in paired sets of twins; August Wilhem born 1842 [3], twin brother August Friedrich born 1842, Dorothe Ernstine born 1845[4] , and her twin sister Dorothy Christine [5], then August Friederich born 1942 died in 1946[6] before the next child August Gustav "Stutz" Schuelke who was born in 1849 [7].

      On September 30, 1794, two years prior to Michaels birth, during the Kosciuszko Uprising, the troops of General Henryk Dabrowski defeated the Prussian army near Labiszyn and captured the town, which was defended by the Prussian garrison of Lieutenant Beyer. After the successful Greater Poland uprising of 1806, it was regained by Poles and included within the short-lived Duchy of Warsaw, and then re-annexed by Prussia after the duchy's dissolution in 1815. Another battle between Polish insurgents and the Prussian army near Labiszyn took place in 1848, during the Greater Poland uprising, as part of the Revolutions of 1848. That is the era that Johann "Stutz" Gustav Schulke was born into.

      There is evidence that some of the children of Michael left the area moving onto Berlin some years after the revollutions. Johann "Stutz" Gustav is the only migrate confirmed going to the United States in 1874 with his wife and newly formed family.
