Isabel of Lorn (MacDougall) (aka de Ergadia) is in a trail badged by the Magna Carta Project to surety barons Richard de Clare and Gilbert de Clare
Isabel of Lorn was the daughter of John of Lorn (or Argyll), elder son of John MacAlan of Argyll, Lord of Lorn in Argyll, and Janet (or Joanna) Isaac, daughter of Thomas Isaac and Maud de Brus. Her date of birth is unknown and is estimated based on Richardson's estimates for her parents births. Isabel is referred to in some 19th and 20th century texts as "Isobel de Ergadia" and Isabel of Lorn. See the comments on her father's profile and the G2G post attached to this profile for discussion/explanation of MacDougall as her last name at birth.
Isabel married (date estimated based on first son's marriage date) to John Stewart, Knt., son and heir of Robert Stewart, Knt., of Innermeath. They had five sons and three daughters, including:
Robert, successor, was a hostage of the ransom of James I in 1424, and created Lord Lorn before 5 September 1439. He married by dispensation dated 27 September 1397, to Joan, daughter of Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany. They had a son, John, Lord Lorn. Robert died before 1449.
Archibald, was mentioned in his nephew's entail at Lorn in 1452.
James, Knt., "Black Knight of Lorn", married about 1439 to Joan Beaufort, widow of James I of Scotland. James was captured at sea by a Flemish ship and put to death.
Alexander, ancestor of the Steuarts of Grandtully.
[possibly] John, Canon of Dunkeld, Dean of Dunkeld.
Christian, married James de Dundas and they had a daughter, who married Sir Alexander Livingston, Lord of Callendar. Christian died before Nov 1451.
Isabel, married William Oliphant, Knt. and David Murray, Knt., and is buried in the collegiate church at Tullibardine.
Jean, married Sir David Bruce of Clackmannan.
In 1418, Isabel and John received papal indults for plenary indulgence at the hour of death, to choose their own confessor, and for a portable altar. "John Stewart, Knight, Lord of Lorn, 'Kinsman of Robert, Duke of Albany' and Isabella his wife obtained from Benedict XIII, anti-pope, a dispensation dated ... 23 Dec. 1418, for a plenary indulgence at the hour of death ..."
Sir John Stewart, Lord of Lorn, died 26 April 1421 and Isabel, Lady of Lorn, died 21 December 1439.
About Isabel MacDougall
Around 1386 both of Ewan's daughters married Stewarts of Innermeath from Perthshire. Janet and Isabella inherited Lorn equally as females under the laws of primogeniture. Then Janet and her husband Sir Robert Stewart traded their half of Lorn to her younger sister Isabella and her husband Sir John Stewart in exchange for Sir John Stewart's inherited estate of Durrisdeer in Perthshire. Through Isabella the Lordship of Lorn then passed to her Stewart husband.
Isabel de Ergadia was the daughter of John of Lorn MacAlan and Jonet Issac. She married Sir John Stewart, Lord of Lorn, son of Sir Robert Stewart. She died on 21 December 1439.
Children of Isabel de Ergadia and Sir John Stewart, Lord of Lorn:
1. Sir James Stewart of Lorn+[3] d. c 1448
2. Sir Robert Stewart, 1st Lord Lorn+[1] d. 1449
