      HOMESTEAD:
From New York they settled in Detroit for a while. Soon afterward, hey heard they could get land for a homestead around 1873/74. They applied and got papers for a homestead near Rogers City (Presque Isle County), MI. They came to Rogers City by boat. Upon arrival, they inquired where this land was located and found it was located in a wooded area between Posen and Rogers City. Neighbors in the area helped them put up some kind of house and helped them move.

      DEATH:
A year later, August became ill. It wasn't long after, he died of what they thought was pneumonia in 1876.

      BURIAL:
Neighbors in the area came and helped with the funeral and burial since no Evangelical Lutheran Church was yet established near them, nor was there a funeral undertaker. They used a large tree which they hewed out for a coffin. August was wrapped in a sheet and laid into a hewn out log and buried in the woods near where they lived. Son August was six years old at this time.
