Notes |
- "Otho Gilbert" is shown in the Gilbert Pedigree for the Visitation of Devon in 1564[1]with wife Elizabeth Hill, and sons John, Thomas, Otho and Galfrid (see later highlighted lists of sons from IPM and Will), and daughter Elizabeth Gilbert who married Thomas Grenefield of Stow (this may be Isabella Gilbert who married Thomas Grenville),
Otes Gilbert was born at Compton in Devon on 24 Mar 1418 and baptised at Marldon:
DEVON. Proof of age. Exeter. 14 April 1439.[2][3]:Regarding his inheritance as son of William son of Elizabeth one of the sisters of Richard Chambernoun father of Otes Chambernoun.....
The jurors were diligently examined regarding the age of Otes, and swear that he was born at Compton and baptised in the church of St John the Baptist in Marldon. He was 21 years of age on the vigil of Lady Day last [24 March]. They well recollect his age for the following reasons. Gilbert Byschop , 60 and more, knows because Joan his daughter was born on the same day. John Furse , 50 and more, was there when Otes was baptised and saw Walter Reynell , the godfather, give him 40s. John Symon of Compton Pool, 53 and more, knows because Richard his son died after a long illness. Henry Marygge , 55 and more, married Alice daughter of William Veysyn on that day. William Langham , 60 and more, rode to Glastonbury on that day and fell among thieves who robbed him. Robert Lormer , 54 and more, was hunting in the forest of Ragch on that day, and was run down by a deer. He broke his left arm. William Botour , 66 and more, held the basin and ewer in church at the baptism. Walter (Wateri) Halewill, 80 and more, was there when Elizabeth Carewe , godmother of Otes, gave him 30s. and a gold ring on the day of his birth. William Norton , 53 and more, met the godfather and godmother at the end of the vill of Newton Bushel and there fell into a moat where he almost drowned. Gervase Mayn, 50 and more, held a candle in church at the baptism. William Prideaux , 58 and more, knows because Katherine his daughter was born on that day. William Wonston , 61, held a torch in church on that day.
17 April 1431: Exeter: Inquisition post Mortem of Agnes widow of Otes Chambernoun:[4]
Otes died without heir of his body. Agnes continued in her estate for life by right of a joint tenant in survivorship, and died so seised.
She died on 29 January last. Elizabeth, Margaret, and Elizabeth, daughters of William Bykebyry and minors in the king's wardship, Otes Gilbert , and John atte Wode , are kin and next heirs of Otes Chambernoun . Elizabeth, Margaret, and Elizabeth are daughters of William son of Katherine daughter of Thomas son of Margaret, one of the sisters of Richard father of Otes Chambernoun . Elizabeth, first daughter, was aged 14 on 23 April last. Margaret was aged 7 years on the day following the feast of Saint... last. Elizabeth, third daughter, was aged 4 on ... Laurence last. Otes Gilbert is the son of Elizabeth, other sister of Richard father of Otes, and was aged ?13 on 24 March last. Owing to his minority, he is in the wardship of the abbot of Torre because William his father, of whom he is the heir, held a messuage and carucate in Blackawton of the abbot by service.... William Gilbert died three years before Agnes.
He died 2 Feb 1493. Sheriff of Devonshire 1475-6, he was a Yorkist and was the first on the list of those to receive knighthood if Edward V had been crowned.[5]
Inquisition Post Mortem: OTHO GILBERT[6]. Writ 4 Feb., inq. 5 Aug., 8 Hen. VII. [=1493]
It appears by a memorandum in the margin that this inquisition was cancelled 17 Nov., 6 Hen. VIII [=1516], because it was not indented as the Statute required. It is mutilated and illegible.
