  • Notes
    • Mary Austen was born about 1587, possibly at nearby Tenterden, Staplehurst or Goudhurst where christenings of Mary or Marie Austen appear around 1584-1587. She "may" have been a daughter of Walter Austen who married at least twice in Biddenden and had several children around this time but a christening record for a daughter Mary is not yet found.

Mary may have had a brother or close relative William Austen, who had a daughter Elizabeth christened at Biddenten on 27 Dec 1612, very close in time to the christenings of Mary's twins Gylbert and Bernard (see Mary's husband Robert for more details). Sadly, Elizabeth was buried 4 days later on 1 Jan 1612/13. Both events are visible on the same parish regiser page at findmypast.co.uk which requires a subscription.

A William Austen was christened 18 Feb 1587/88 at Biddenden as son of Walter so that may have been Mary's family or relatives.[1]

A Walter Austen married Mary Grinnell 27 May 1600 at Biddenden, this may have been another sibling if it were "Walter Jr" or possibly a third marriage for a father Walter. There would seem to be a connection to Walter Austen who married Julian Cocheman in 1573 (she died after having one daughter) followed by Alice Taylor at Biddenden in 1576.
      Marriage & Children

Robert Sutton marriage to Mary Austen 13 Oct 1606 (given the later burial record this is very likely the correct marriage)[2]
George christened 27 Dec 1607 The alias "Baldock" originally seen on father Robert's profile comes from this christening showing Robert as "alias Baldock" or something similar. The original register image on findmypast.co.uk is clearly readable showing this alias. Interestingly, the christening is written twice, once with the alias and once without, 2 lines apart.
Twins "Gylbert" and Bernard 13 Sep 1612 (indexed searches of this register at various sites show only Bernard/Barnard but the register is in good shape and clearly legible showing clearly the twin brother Gylbert.
      Robert Jr. 26 Feb 1614
      Simon 19 Dec 1619[3]
On 8 Mar 1620/21 Mary, wife of Robert Sutton was buried at Biddenden.

      Disputed Children

While Mary and Robert Sutton definitely had sons Simon and George among others at Biddenden, it is not proven that those two were the early immigrants to Plymouth Colony.
