Notes - Dorcas Hull Cox has been somewhat of a challenge to research due to all the misinformation that is continuously passed down regarding her.
This is what extensive research has provided:
Dorcas Hull Cox was born approximately 1685, in the town of Saco, York County, Providence of Maine, Massachusetts Bay Colony, to Phineas Hull and wife Jerusha Hitchcock.
Dorcas was orphaned at an early age, her mother Jerusha said to have died in 1689 and father Phineas about 1691. It is believed Dorcas was raised by one of her paternal uncles, Hopewell, Benjamin or Samuel Hull. All three uncles relocated to New Jersey, where Dorcas probably met, married and settled with Phillip Cox.
Dorcas Hull was never married to a Graves. Her one and only marriage was to Phillip Cox 1677/80-1736. This evidenced by the recently discovered family Bible, originally the property of Dorcas' mother Jerusha Hitchcock Hull.
Dorcas and Phillip's first child, a son John, was born 20 Oct 1703, probably at Somerset County, New Jersey. Although a marriage record has not yet been found, using the birth of the first child, the marriage can be estimated at 1702 to early 1703.
Dorcas was the mother of seven (7) children, born between 1703 and 1719.
On the 5th day of November 1731, Dorcas and Phillip Cox sell land situated in Biddeford, York County, Providence of Massachusetts Bay in New England to Pendleton Fletcher, Sen. On 17 Dec 1731, Phillip Cox gives power of attorney to his "trusty and well beloved son Phillip" for both himself "and wife Dorcas, (late Dorcas Hull)". Several other land transactions are found through 1734, most being in Biddeford, York County, Providence of Massachusetts Bay in New England.
Phillip Cox (Sr.) passed away 12 Jul 1736 at Somerset County, New Jersey and Dorcas, along with John Kinsey, Junior, is named executor.
Dorcas continues to reside in Somerset County, New Jersey until her death in Feb 1753. She is believed to have been buried on the family farm with husband Phillip and later son Phillip. Unfortunately, the burial site has been lost and may be part of the Highway.
