  • Notes
    • There are around 240 of us Cox Cousins who have worked together in an attempt to prove the father of John (P.) Cox & Phineas Cox.

Seventeen of our male cousins have provided Y-DNA, and through Y-DNA & a prolific paper trail have lead back to Phillip Cox & Dorcas Hull of NJ.

We have pages from a Bible originally owned by Jerusha Hitchcock, mother of Dorcas Hull, wife of Phineas Hull, which show the names, dates & times of birth of Phillip Cox & Dorcas Hull's children. One of those children is John Cox b: 1703. John married Mary (possibly Taylor), they had children (per John's will) Jacob, Samuel, Mary, Dorcas, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Phineas, Marcey, & William.

Around 1750, Jacob & Samuel, children of John Cox & Mary Taylor, leave NJ & settle in Halifax County, VA. Between 1750 & 1783 they appear in Pittsylvania & Henry Cos., VA. We believe Jacob & Samuel Cox's land was most likely in the same place, it was the county boundaries that changed.

Further support of the belief this Jacob and Samuel Cox originated in NJ is that two Fulkersons, Frederick and Fulker Fulkerson, appear to have traveled with them from NJ. The Cox & Fulkersons bought land in Halifax Co., VA. on the same day, from the same person. Also Jacob and Samuel Cox's grandfather Phillip Cox had dealings with the Fulkerson ancestor in NJ, and Samuel Cox is believed to have a son named Fulker.

John (P.) & Phineas Cox were both born in Halifax Co., VA. John (P.) married Sarah Nunnelly in Henry Co., VA. & took the oath of allegiance there. Phineas enlisted in the revolutionary war from Henry Co., VA. per his pension application.

Around 1782, John (P.) & Phineas head to the Nashville, Davidson Co., NC/TN area. Phineas was granted land in Nashville for military service, however, he was too young to claim it. Phineas marries Barbara Stump, daughter of Frederick Stump, about 1783. Barbara gives this date in her widow's pension application, stating they were married about that time before there was much government.

Frederick Stump resided on White's Creek and per a land record, right next door Samuel Cox owned land that bordered Frederick Stump.

Also in the Nashville area at the same time there was a Fulker Cox. So now we have Samuel, John (P.), Phineas & Fulker Cox in Nashville.

John (P.) & Phineas Cox survey land in Logan Co., KY beginning about 1791 & settle there. By 1792, Samuel & Fulker Cox join John (P.) & Phineas. Samuel Cox, Jr. also appears about this time and in April 1797 a William Cox married Hannah French in Warren Co., KY.

The 1800 KY tax list shows Samuel Cox, Sr. & Jr., John (P.), Fulker, Phineas & William Cox residing in Warren Co., KY. Land records & tax records show this group residing along the Gasper & Green Rivers area with land bordering one another.

We have not found a wife for Samuel Cox, Sr., nor when or where he died. The last land transaction found for Samuel Cox in Warren Co., KY. was in 1797.

I hired a professional genealogist & she suspects Samuel Cox, Sr. disposed of his properties & belongings prior to his death & therefore left no will or probate.

John (P.) & Phineas Cox remained in Warren Co., KY. Fulker, Samuel, Jr. & William went to Maury Co., TN (1807) settled where they weren't supposed to, then moved to Giles Co., TN. Samuel, Jr. remained in Giles Co., until his death 1824. Fulker Cox moved to Marshall Co., MS. where he died in 1840. I lose track of William Cox who married Hannah French.

      Additional info:

We don't know where the middle initial P. came from for John Cox, as we have no records showing he ever used it. His daughter Jane named one of her sons John Pinkney Isbell, so it's reasonable to believe P. was his middle initial.

Regarding the Y-DNA, we have our own group at FTDNA in the Cox Project. R1b-L Philip Cox & Dorcas of NJ and Related Coxes in Halifax Co VA. The Y-DNA shows connections between descendants of Jacob Cox Sr. b: 1723-1725 NJ & Samuel Cox, Sr. b: 1725-1727 NJ, sons of John Cox b: 1703 & Mary Taylor, b: 1705. Further, John Cox b: 1703, had a brother Phillip Cox b: 1705, one of his descendants is also a close match to descendants of Jacob & Samuel Cox, Sr.

I hope this explains why some of us believe Samuel Cox, Sr. b: 1725-1727 NJ d: Unknown, is the father of the Cox who settled in Halifax & Henry Cos., VA., Nashville, Davidson Co., NC/TN, & Warren Co., KY.
