Notes - Frances is presumed to be a daughter of Thomas Bowyer and Margaret Banks, although the exact date of her birth is unknown. On 21 July 1630 her husband John gifted the parish of Bishop Stortford with the deed to a portion of his own land which included a heremail or booth, and "half of a well lying in Hockerill Street," in appreciation for the help given by the parish to Margaret, his mother-in-law, the wife of Thomas Bowyer, after the death of her husband. This deed is the only evidence, although circumstantial, which establishes Frances's parentage.
Marriage and Children
Frances married, probably shortly before 1610 at Bishop Stortford, John Dane.
There were at least four children from this marriage:
1.) Elizabeth Dane; b. c1611; m. Jun 27 1628 James Howe; d. 21 Jan 1694
2.) John Dane; b. c1612; m(1) Eleanor Clark; m(2) Alice (Dutch) Newman; d. 29 Sep 1684
3.) Rev. Francis Dane; bp 20 Nov 1615; m(1) Elizabeth Ingalls (Edmund); m(2) 22 Nov 1677 Mrs. Mary Thomas; m(3) 1690 Hannah (Chandler) Abbot; d. 17 Feb 1696/7
4.) Mary Dane; bp 1 May 1616; d. 28 May 1617
What little is known of Frances's life is gleaned from a biographical sketch written by her eldest son, John, in 1682. He mentioned their move, when he was still very young, to Bishop Stortford and how his father returned to settle his affairs in Berkhamsted and remained there much longer than expected. His mother, not yet knowing any of her neighbors and with two small children to care for, found herself in financial straits. Dane relayed that his mother "...met with sum wants and was troubled and weapt...[and] I doubt not but she lay'd open her wants to god for she was a serious woman." Frances's prayers were answered almost immediately when both of the children went outside to play and each found a shilling lying in the dirt beneath the window.
Dane mentions at least one instance in which his mother had a prophetic dream which she could not get out of her mind, and which turned out to happen in life exactly as it did in her dream. He also relates a story about how, shortly after his own marriage, he was struck with palsy and suffered greatly from it. He was told by a physician that it could not be cured, but his mother Frances had been a servant to Lady Margaret Denny and from her had received a recipe that had "cuered an ould woman of thre score yeres ould" of the same condition. Frances came and applied the poultice she had made to her son, and Dane recovered completely.
Immigration
Frances immigrated to New England with her husband John, arriving about a year later than their oldest son. John Dane, Sr had settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts by April 9, 1639 when 'John Deane the elder' was granted a house lot with one acre and two planting lots.
Death
The date of Frances's death is unknown, but must have occurred before 2 July 1643 when John Dane married (second) Annis (Bayford) Chandler.
