    • Biography

      Identity of Bush Smith:

Lt. William T Anderson married Bush Smith 3 March 1864. His brother, JamesAnderson, reportedly married Bill's widow. James Anderson married Mary Erwin 21 October 1868 in Grayson County, Texas It is easy to assume that Mary Erwin was another name for Bush Smith. There is evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that Mary Erwin was not Bush Smith - Mary was not quite 12; the Bible of her sister, Martha Erwin Maxwell, has an 1866 or 1867 arrival date of the Erwin family in Grayson County; William H. Erwin identified Mary as one of his 7 minor children in his February 1867 Grayson County guardianship petition.

      Who was Bush Smith?
      These are known facts:
      J. M. Anderson married Malinda Anderson 22 August 1866.
Malinda Smith, born about February 1850, was the oldest child of Burrell P. Smith and Sarah Ann Henderson.
Malinda Smith would have been 14 years old when Lieut. William Anderson was married 3 March 1864.
The late husband's surname rather than the widow's maiden name is usually found on Grayson County marriage licenses, i. e. If Malinda Smith was the widow of Bill Anderson, she would probably be identified as Malinda Anderson in a second marriage.
A marriage license for Malinda Smith has not been found in Grayson County records.
The 1859 Grayson County petition of Sarah "Sallie" Henderson Smith identified her four children as Malinda A., B. P., Paulina, and Virginia.
The 1900 census shows that Sallie was the mother of 5 children, and 3 were living. (Burrell Perry Smith Jr., Paulina Smith Whitehurst, and Virginia Smith Burney were living)
Burrell Perry Smith Jr. and Mary Lucy Erwin Anderson named their first child, Virginia Bush Smith.
Burrell Perry Smith Jr. had a first cousin, Bush Smith, born in 1870.
Jim Cummins, in his book, referred twice to the mother of Mrs. Anderson as Mrs. Smith.

Conclusion based on currently available information: Mary Lucy Erwin was not Bush Smith. Malinda Smith, daughter of Burrell P. and Sarah Henderson Smith was Bush Smith.
