  Biography Jane was the daughter of Sir Edward Gorges of Wraxall, Somerset, and his wife Mary Poyntz. She married twice. Her first husband was John Ayshe of Tykenham, Somerset. He died in 1561 She married, secondly, Sir Robert Stafford, who served as Serjeant Porter to Queen Elizabeth. In recognition of his services, in 1572 the Queen granted him the reversion of the lease of lands in Bedfordshire, Gloucestershire, Cheshire, Yorkshire and elsewhere. He also possessed lands in Upton, Northamptonshire, and Hanslope in Buckinghamshire, near the border with Northamptonshire. Dame Jane and her husband were partially successful in a Chancery lawsuit to recover the manors of Chelvey and Migill in Somerset, "which she maintained had been settled upon her as a jointure by her father Sir Edward Gorges and her father-in-law John Ayshe, senior, but subsequently conveyed away by John Ayshe, junior, to certain third parties in trust for his mistress and bastard son." They had a son Edward, who was baptised at St James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, in 1562. Her second husband died in 1574 and was buried at Hanslope, Buckinghamshire. She died in 1591 and was buried with her second husband at Hanslope. Her will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 23 February 1591/2.[1] A transcript of her will is here. Sources ?
