  John Russell Sr. born about 1597, of Weathersfield, moved to Hadley , Mass age 62 years in 1659. He died 8 May 1680 age 83 years. First minister of Hadley, Mass. was Henry Smith his widow married John Russell , Dorothy died at Hadley , Mass in 1694. John Russell Jr. b. abt 1623 - succeeded Henry Smith as 2nd minister of Wethersfield afterwards First Minister of Hadley, Massachusetts IN MEMORIES See the latest NEHGS scholarship about this person in "The Great Migration," Vol. 6, R-S, pages 134-139. This professional research concluded "Origin unknown" but by association, may have been from near Ipswich, Suffolk. The claim of Cretingham could not be supported by any evidence. A book about this person and his descendants is Gurdon Wadsworth Russell, "An Account of Some of the Descendants of John Russell, the Emigrant from Ipswich England, Who Came to Boston, New England, October 3, 1635," pages 109-116, and is posted in Memories.
