Lincoln, &c. son and heir of Sir Walter DEVEREUX, of the same (who died 22 or 23 April 1459), by Elizabeth, daughter and heir of John MERBURY, sometimc Chief Justice in South Wales. He married, 1stly, before 26 November 1446, Anne, daughter and heir of Sir William DE FERRERS, of Chartley, by Elizabeth, his wife. On 17 March 1452/3 they had a grant that they might have livery of her father's lands, without proof of her age, she being then aged 14 and more: on 20 March following they had livery of her inheritance in cos. Oxon, Berks, Hunts, Stafford, and the city of London, the fealty of Walter being ordered to be taken by the escheator in cos. Oxon and Berks. He was aged 26 and more, or 27 and more, at his father's death in 1459. He was with the Duke of York in the skirmish at Ludford, 12 October 1459, but surrendered and threw himself on the King's mercy, and was granted his life, but was condemned to forfeit his lands: these he was afterwards permitted to redeem for a fine of 500 marks. Knight of the Shire for co. Hereford, 1460. He accompanied Edward, Duke of York, on his advance from Gloucester to London in February 1460/1, and was present at the council held at Baynard's Castle, 3 March following, where it was resolved that Edward should be made King. On account of his great services against Henry VI, the Duke of Exeter, the Earls of Pembroke and Wiltshire, and other rebels and traitors, in 1 Edward IV he was raised to the rank of a Baron, thereby becoming LORD FERRERS, and on 20 February 1461/2 he had an extensive grant of forfeited lands. He was summoned to Parliament from 26 July 1461 to 9 December 1483 by writs directed Waltero Devereux, with the additions de Ferrers militi [1461), domino de Ferreys chivaler (1462 to 1462/3), and de Ferreys or de Ferrers, chivaler [1466/7 to 1483). He accompanied the King in his expedition to the North in November 1462. On 18 June 1463 he was appointed Constable of Aberystwith Castle, for life, and on 10 August 1464 joint Keeper of le heywode, co. Hereford. He was granted the offices of Constable of the castles, and Steward of the lordships, of Brecknock, Hay, and Huntington, during the minority of Henry, grandson and heir of Humphrey, late Duke of Buckingham, 16 November 1469, and was appointed Sheriff of co. Carnarvon and Master Forester of Snoweden hilles in North Wales, 28 July 1470, for life. He was one of the Lords who, with others, swore in the Parliament Chamber at Westminster, 3 July 1471, to accept Edward, Prince of Wales, as heir to the Crown, and was one of those selected, 20 February 1472/3, to be tutors and councillors of the Prince till he was 14 years of age. He accompanied the King to France in July 1475, and was present at the conference at Saint-Christ in Vermandois, 13 August, when the Kine agreed to bind himself to withdraw his army into England. On 31 Jan. 1475/6 he received a grant, to him and the heirs male of his body, of the manor of Wigston, co. Leicester, forfeited by John Veer, late Earl of Oxford; and 12 August 1484, of the manor of Cheshunt, Herts, to hold for life, as from the preceding Michaelmas.
His 1st wife, the said Anne, who was aged 11 years and 8 months in July 1450, died 9 January 1468/9, aged 30. He married, 2ndly, Jane. He was slain at the battle of Bosworth, 22 August 1485, and was attainted of high treason in the Parliament which met 7 November 1485, and was adjudged to have forfeited all that he possessed on the preceding 21 August, whether held in fee simple, fee tail, or for life. His widow married, 2ndly, Thomas VAUGHAN, who was living 18 November 1492. She married 3rdly Sir Edward BLOUNT, of Sodington, co. Worcester, who died s.p. 6 July 1499, and was buried in Mamble Church, co. Worcester. She married, 4thly, before 31 May 1507, Thomas POYNTZ: both were living 9 November 1512.
