Notes - Biography
Elizabeth Goode is clearly documented as a daughter of John Goode and his second wife Anne. Anne, the mother, is named Anne Bennet among descendants who wrote the first family history.[1]
This idea of Anne Bennet is also supported by naming conventions. Elizabeth was born around 1678 and married John Blackman. She is named Elizabeth Blackman in her father's 1708 will. [2]
There is no documentation of her having a middle name of Bennett and it is an internet based addition.
The Virginia Cousins: A Study of the Ancestry and Posterity of John Goode page 26 as listed below has extensive documentation of family traditions, including how the stepson Samuel and stepmother Anne were at odds with one another.
Not one single time in this volume is any mention made of Anne being of Native American stock. In fact the author states she was from Holland. The Native American claim is based entirely on a creek in North Carolina bearing the Bennett name near the Chowanoke tribal lands. This is another modern flight of fancy.
There is no documentation that she moved to Chowan County, North Carolina and married there. There is just a statement that she was married there in 1699. It seems to be asserted just to place her in the vicinity of Bennett's Creek.
Bennett's Creek in Chowan County was territory of the Chowanoke tribe. However, there is absolutely no connection between Elizabeth Goode and the Chowanoke Tribe. This is a spurious connection that is misleading at best.
There were several Bennett families that settled in Virginia that are well documented. Since John Goode is noted as fighting against the Native Americans, and joining in Bacon's rebellion in part due to the unwillingness of Governor Berkeley to protect against their incursions, it is extremely unlikely that he would at the same time be fathering children by a Native American wife.
