      NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH Elijah Wilson Carney born in Shelbyville 2 Mar 1827, married to Amelia B.

      DON'T Add Amelia Burns Martin and her 11 children to THIS Elijah Wilson Carney.'

      Elijah Wilson Carney was living in District 25 in Davidson County, Tennessee at age 15 with his family. At age 25 in 1861 he enlisted in the Confederate 18th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Company E with his brother William. He was a private.

      In early February Elijah and his brother participated in an attack on Fort Donelson, where they captured a battery and four guns with about 181 men killed, wounded or prisoners. Then on 16 Feb 1862 their position at Fort Donelson in Stewart County, Tennessee was overrun and he and his brother William were captured and imprisoned and taken up north to Camp Butler, near Springfield Illinois. Both were then sent to Vicksburg, Mississippi for a prisoner exchange on 23 Sep 1862.

      After the war, Elijah W. Carney married Mary Emma Brown b. 1843 Williamson Co. TN, a daughter of John G. and Martha E.(-?-) Brown, on 06 Nov 1867 in Davidson Co. TN. They had a daughter Lena Eoleen Carney abt. 1869. Lena lived with her widowed grandmother Martha E. Brown before marrying Thomas Edward Frensley on 21 Feb 1889 Davidson Co. TN. Thomas E. and Lena Carney Frensley had fraternal twins in 1900, Ethel and Earl Frensley. Lena Carney Frensley was buried in David Read's lot, Sec 15 in Nashville's City Cemetery on 02 Jun 1942. Her grandfather John G. Brown was also buried in Read's lot on 02 Dec 1875.

      Elijah divorced Emma Brown even before their daughter was born and then married Martha Ann Stewart (both marriages documented in Tennessee State Marriages) and 3 months after wedding, Lena was born to first wife Emma.

      Elijah went back to farming and raised his family primarily in Cheatham County, Tennessee. He died at age 49 in Lauderdale County, Tennessee two years after the birth of his last daughter Etta Rebecca Carney.

      Died young at age 49, 20 years after war end in 1885. After his death, his cousin John Spencer Carney helped out Marth Ann "Mattie" get by without the income lost due to Elijah's early death. Robert S. Carney writes to me in May 2021: "I went through an odd assortment of paper scraps left by our great grandfather John Spencer Carney. I found a few tax receipts ~1895 where he had paid land taxes for a Mrs. E. W. Carney who owned 40 acres."
