    Notes:

Note: "Some Correction & Additions to CP", citing CP IX:610 note (c), suggests that Isabel may have been a younger daughter than her sister Margaret (because it was Margaret's son who became Duke of Norfolk), despite all the sources that have Isabel as eldest daughter.

    --------------------------

Isabel, widow of Henry Ferrers, son and heir of William, Lord Ferrers of Groby, and 1st daughter and in issue coheir of Thomas de Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk. She died a prisoner of Margaret, Countess of Shrewsbury, 2nd wife of John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, and step-mother of James Berkeley's 4th wife. She [Margaret] was granddaughter and coheir of Thomas Berkeley, Lord Berkeley, uncle of James, from whom the title had passed to James. [Magna Charta Sureties]

Isabel Mowbray (died 27 Sep 1452), eldest daughter of 1st Duke of Norfolk of the 1396 creation and widow of Henry Ferrers (dvp 1394), son and heir of 5th Lord (Baron) Ferrers (of Groby). [Burke's Peerage]

    ---------------------------

He [James de Berkeley] married, 3rdly, 1423-24, Isabel, widow of Henry FERRERS, son and heir apparent of William, Lord FERRERS (of Groby), and 1st daughter (whose issue became coheirs) of Thomas (DE MOWBRAY), DUKE OF NORFOLK, by Elizabeth, da. of RICHARD (FITZ ALAN), EARL OF ARUNDEL. She was, while about to appeal to the King in Council on behalf of her husband, arrested by order of Margaret, Countess of Shrewsbury (granddaughter and coheir of the last Lord Berkeley), and imprisoned at Gloucester, where she died 27 September 1452, and was buried in the church of the Greyfriars there. [Complete Peerage II:132-3, XIV:87, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

    ---------------------------

He [Henry Ferrers] married, shortly before 13 July 1416, Isabel, 1st daughter of Thomas (MOUBRAY), DUKE, or NORFOLK and EARL MARSHAL, by his 2nd wife, Elizabeth D'ARUNDELLE, sister and coheir of Thomas EARL OF ARUNDEL and 1st daughter of Richard EARL OF ARUNDEL. He died v.p. and s.p.m. His widow married, in or before 3 Hen. VI, as 2nd wife, Sir James BERKELEY, of Berkeley, co. Gloucester [LORD BERKELEY]. She died in Gloucester Castle, being then a prisoner there 23 September 1452, and was buried in the Church of the Grey Friars at Gloucester. He, who was born at Raglan, co. Monmouth, about 1394, died in Berkeley Castle shortly before 5 December 1463, and was buried in Berkeley Church. [Complete Peerage V:357-8, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Note: Funny how some authors for CP (and other publications) like to fancy up the names "Moubray", "Arundelle", etc. It just adds to the difficulty (unnecessarily) of genealogy. Compare this entry to the similar one just above it for James de Berkely from CP. Rather than creating showy names, the author (G. W. Watson) of this article could have spent more productive time coming up with an approximate birth or death date for Henry. If the author was trying to stick close to the original spelling in certain documents, then why not "Richardus" instead of "Richard", or "Isabela" instead of "Isabel", or "Jacoba" instead of "James", as these were the names as written in Latin.

    ---------------------------

Note: Isabel died in the custody of Margaret de Beauchamp because of a prolonged feud over the estates of Thomas de Berkeley and Margaret de Lisle. The feud ended 20 March 1469/70 with the Battle of Nibley Green in which James de Berkeley & Isabel de Mowbray's eldest son William 1st/last Marquess de Berkeley killed Margaret de Beauchamp & John Talbot's grandson Sir Thomas Talbot, 2nd/last Viscount Lisle. See notes under James de Berkeley & William de Berkeley.

    VISCOUNTCY OF BERKELEY (I) 1481

    MARQUESSATE OF BERKELEY (I) 1489 to 1492

WILLIAM (DE BERKELEY), LORD BERKELEY, son and heir of the last Lord, by Isabel, his wife, who "may bee called William the Wast all." He was born at Berkeley Castle, 1426, was in the retinue of Cardinal Beaufort at Calais about 1438, and, on his return, while still under age, was knighted. He petitioned the Crown against the claims of Margaret, Countess of Shrewsbury, and other the heirs general of his great-uncle Thomas, to the Berkeley estates, which petition was pending when the Countess died in June 1468. By her grandson and heir, Thomas (Talbot), Viscount Lisle, he, though but 19, was challenged to settle the claim by combat, which took place 20 March 169/70, at Nibley Green, wherein the Viscount was slain. K.B. at the investiture of Edward, Prince of Wales, 18 April 1475. On the marriage of the heiress of the Mowbray family to the King's younger son, the Duke of York, he released his right to a reversion of a moiety of her estates if she died s.p. (which happened soon afterwards on 16 January 1477/8) to the King and his issue in tail male (which issue became extinct in 1483), receiving a discharge for debts amounting to ?34,000, and being, when the grant was ratified by Parliament, created VISCOUNT BERKELEY, 21 April 1481. P.C. 5 March 1482/3. The vast estates of the Mowbray family being divided between him and his cousin (the other coheir) Lord Howard, each was honoured with some of their extinct titles by the new King, Richard III. He was accordingly, on 28 June 1483, created EARL OF NOTTINGHAM, while, on the same day, Lord Howard was created Duke of Norfolk and Earl Marshal. At the coronation of Henry VII, 30 October 1485, he was Bearer of the Third Sword, having been created joint Lord High Steward and Earl Marshal for the occasion. On 19 February 1485/6 he was created EARL MARSHAL and GREAT MARSHAL OF ENGLAND, with remaider to the heirs male of his body. On 9 November 1487 he was joint Lord High Steward at the coronation of Elizabeth, the Queen Consort. On 10 December 1487, and subsequently, he settled the Castle and honour of Berkeley, the Barony of Bedford, the Barony of Gower, and the greater part of his manors and Iands in England, Wales, and Ireland, on himself in tail general, with remainder to the King in tail male, with remainder to his own right heirs. For this consideration he received permission (of which he freely availed himself) to alienate divers other Iands, and was created, 28 January 1488/9, MARQUESS OF BERKELEY.

He married 1stly, [at the age of about 41) in 1466, Elizabeth, daughter of Reynold (WEST), LORD DE LA WARR by Margaret, daughter of ROBERT THORLEY. From her he was divorced shortly afterwards, against which she appealed to Pope Paul II, who issued letters thereon, 20 November 1467. He married, 2ndly, November 1468, Joan, widow of Sir William WILLOUGHBY, daughter of Sir Thomas STRANGWAYS, by Katharine, daughter of Ralph (Nevill] EARL OF WESTMORLAND. She died 24 February 1484/5, and was buried at St Augustine's Friars, London. He married 3rdly, about 1486, Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas FIENNES (son and heir apparent of Richard, LORD DACRE), by Alice, daughter of Henry (FITZ HUGH), LORD FITZ HUGH. He died s.p.s., 14 February 1491/2, in the Sanctuary at Westminster, in his 67th year, and was buried at St. Augustine's Friars afsd. not leaving sufficient assets to pay the arrears of wages due to his household. At his death the Marquessate of Berkeley and the Earldom of Nottingham became extinct. His widow married Sir Thomas BRANDON, K.G., whose will, dated 11 January 1509/10, was proved 11May 1510. She died 10 September 1497, and was buried at St. George's Chapel. Windsor. [Complete Peerage II: 133-35, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Note: CP IV:9 states that Anne's father was John, not Thomas (same person, just wrong name).

William Lord Berkeley, Earl Marshal of England (-1492)

James and Isabel's eldest son, William (the Waster) accumulated many riches and honours. Of his inheritance from his mother's family he gave over 50 manors to King Henry VII.

William was challenged to battle by Viscount Lisle, heir of the Earl of Shrewsbury. In the last battle between private hosts on English soil, the battle of Nibbley Green, the Viscount was defeated and killed by William's superior forces, including archers from the forest of Dean. William's forces rode at once to Wooton, to sack the place. The Viscount's widow promptly miscarried, and so the direct Talbot line ended. This finally ended the dispute between the two families.

William became Lord Berkeley, Earl Marshal of England, Earl of Nottingham, Viscount Dursley, Marquis of Berkeley, and probably lots of other things as well. He outlived his three children, but then disinherited his brother because he had "married beneath him"; an Alderman's daughter named Isabel Meade. He left Berkeley Castle and its estates to the crown for 'entail male', which meant that only with the extinction of the Royal male line on the death of King Edward VI (-1553) did the Castle revert once more to the Berkeley line.

My own person feelings about this man are that given the events surrounding the end of the Plantagenet line, and the start of the Tudors, with Henry VII's victory at Bosworth, and his subsequent ruthless purging of all those who stood in his way, it would not be surprising to find that William found himself with little choice but to make over the bulk of his wealth to the King's line.

William married Elizabeth WEST in 1466 in 1st Wife - Divorced By 1467. Elizabeth (daughter of Reynold 3Rd Baron WEST, 6th Baron De La Warre and Margaret THORLEY) was born before 1433 in Oakhanger, Hampshire, England; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Note: Though Maurice Berkeley inherited the title of Baron from his elder brother William, the 2nd Baron, William had given Berkeley Castle to the crown: Henry VII (and his male heirs). The family did not get the Castle back until after the death of Edward VI of England in 1553. Some say that William gave the Castle and most of the rest of the huge Berkeley estate away partly because he disapproved of his nephew & heir, Maurice's marriage to Isabel Mead, as it was below his station.

    BARONY of BERKELEY (III) 1492

MAURICE [BERKELEY] de jure [apparently] LORD BERKELEY [1421] brother of the whole blood and heir, who "may bee called Maurice: the Lawier " inasmuch as though totally disinherited by his brother, and though 56 years of age at his brother's death, he recovered, within 7 years, upwards of 50 manors and other lands, the alienation of which had been effected illegally. He had been Knight of the body to Edward IV.

He married, in his 30th year (1465), Isabel (at that time a widow with 3 children who all died young), only daughter of Philip MEAD, of Mead's Place, in Wraxall, Somerset, Alderman, and three times (1458-59, 1461-62, 1468-69) Mayor of Bristol, by Isabel, his wife. She became heir to her brother Thomas Mead, inheriting lands at Thornbury, co. Gloucester, and at Wraxall, Ashton, Bedminster, and Tickeiiham, Somerset. He died September 1506, aged 70, and was buried at Austin Friars, London. His widow died after 29 May 1514, at the same age of 70, at Coventry, and was buried with him. [Complete Peerage II:135, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurice_Berkeley,_3rd_Baron_Berkeley
"Because of his marriage to Isabel Meade, the daughter of a Bristol alderman, who was considered to be below his social status, Maurice was disinherited by his elder brother William Berkeley, 1st Marquess of Berkeley, 2nd Baron Berkeley (1426? 1492), who died without surviving progeny. As he never therefore possessed Berkeley Castle, he had no claim to the ancient feudal barony of Berkeley, which was dependant on landholdings."

The late lord's brother, now stripped of the ancient honours and possessions of his forefathers, (though he continued through his life to be styled by courtesy Lord Berkeley,) resided, as has been stated, at Thornbury, where, of his own and his wife's, he had a fair estate.

As soon as the inquisitions after his brother's death were returned into Chancery, Maurice commenced proceedings to recover from the Crown some of the manors which the Marquess had given away, being advised that such alienations were illegal, and contrary to some old settlements and entails. In these litigations he was generally successful, the late Marquess, in his anxiety to barter his lands for honours and patronage, having often overlooked the nature of the titles by which he held them. Maurice's first success was the recovery of the manor of Sages in Slimbridge, consisting of seven tenements and 290 acres of land, and he entered into possession and held his first court there in 1499. Many other similar suits followed, with the like success, and while these were going on the manor and borough of Tetbury, and several others descended to him as one of the heirs of the lord Breouse. In 1505 he claimed and recovered the advowson of the Church of Wotton-under-Edge, but immediately made it over to the Abbey of Tewkesbury. He also commenced a suit to recover the advowson of Slimbridge, held by Magdalen College, Oxford, which was settled by a compromise. The College retaining the advowson but paying him a sum of money, and undertaking to remember him in their prayers.

In his journeys to and from London, and when visiting his manor of Callowden, near Coventry, finding that heand his suite were not received at the Monastery of Combe, in Warwickshire, with the honour and respect due to him as descendant from one of its founders, Maurice exhibited a bill in Chancery against the Abbot and Monks, claiming his rights in respect of his descent from Thomas Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, their founder, and obtained an acknowledgement of his claim.

Maurice died in 1506, and was buried in the Church of the Augustine Friars, in London. His eldest son, Maurice, succeeded him.

SIR MAURICE BERKELEY de jure 3rd BARON BERKELEY "the Lawier" was born about 1436 of Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire, England, to Sir James de Berkeley, "The Just," 1st Baron Berkeley (1394-1463) and Isabella Mowbray (1396-1452.) He married Lady Isabel Meade, about 1465 of Berkeley Castle, Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England.

Maurice Berkely was disinherited by his brother, and though 56 years of age at his brother's death, was able to recover, within seven years, upwards of 50 manors and other lands that had been alienated illegally.

Maurice Berkeley died in September 1506 of Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire, England, age 70. He is buried at Church of the Augustine Friars, London.
