Samuel Bills (1770-1840)
The First Michigan Emigrant Samue
l was the firstBills to emigrant to the Mich igan Territory. Land was for sale , andhe bought fort y acres in Wayne County in 1835.1 Weakened by his move and old age, he lived only a short time on hi s new land, but his children who buried him would se e his land patent becomepart of a state in 1840, a nd later an integral part of theDetroit Metropolita n Area.2 A journey to new and strangesurroundings was no t new for Samuel. He was probably born inVermont i n 1777, and could be the same "Samuel Bills" who lived i nBerkshire, Franklin County, Vermont in 1810 with his w ife, two boys, and four daughters.3 Sometime between 181 3 and 1819, he crossed theAdironacks to New York Stat e, and settled (again probably) inJefferson County.4 Before he traveled the length of the Erie Canal and Lake Erie to Michigan, Samuel had raised part o f hisfamily, and had started on another. Marvin an d Syman Bills whowere mentioned in his will, probab ly his older sons who wereborn in Vermont and ha d established their own households by1835.5 Ira (180 9-1896), Alvah (1812-1900), William (1819-1900), andHir am ((1824-1872) who were mentioned came with their fat her fromNew York to Nankin Township. They helped hi m to raise the firstroof over the Michigan Bills an d stayed in Michigan, near theoriginal homestead, th e rest of their lives which saw thetwilight of th e 1900. Samuel had other children about whom we donot k now too much. He had sons named Albert and Samuel , anddaughters named Sally and Eunice, all of who m were born between1825 and 1836. 6 At the time o f his will in 1854, Albert andSamuel lived in Milwa ukee, with their brother Syman; Sally livedin Branc h City (Coldwater) Michigan, and Eunice with her hus bandEdwin Haywood in Nankin.7 At his death , Samuel was married to aPermelia L andden who later remarried a Issac Scudder, ofFarmingto n,Michigan in 1845.8 Permelia was most likely the mo ther of Albert,Samuel, and Eunice all born after 1 825, questionably, the mother ofHiram, William, and S ally who were born between 1819 and 1825.Although w e do not know Sally's age , we think that there wa s aseven year "gap" between Alvah and William (1812-1819 ) which might bea period when Samuel was widowed be fore marrying Miss Ladden inNew York State.9 A Eunice Woodruff is listed on Alvah's death certificate as his mother, and because of this record, a nd Ira'sconfirmed birthdate in 1809 when Permelia wa s only 16, we thinkthat this Eunice was their mothe r as well as Syman's and Marvin's.In any even t , Samuel had at least two wives, and at least te nchildren. He brought only part of this large famil y to Michiganwith him. Samuel died on May 3, 1840 in Nankin Township , WayneCounty, Michigan. He was the first "Bills " to be buried in UnionChapel Cemetery. Unlike the ir parents, many oif his grandchildrenwould be pulle d by the pioneer spirit from Michigan to parts of the United States and Canada. Like their parents, man y of hisgrandchildren would stay in Michigan to bec ome the "MichiganBills".

History of Royalton Vermont. "Under control of New York State until1769, at
the Westminister Convention of January 15, 1777, Vermont inhabitants
voted for a new state. In October 28, 1777, the people of Royalton
had to pay $2/acre to keep their land, and joined in to petition thestate.
Settlers had acquired their land under a charter to New York State. Thismay
account for some of the confusion, about birthplace, New York orVermont, for Samuel's children.

Hiram Bills Family Research of Beatrice (Mary Van Allen) Bills
Hiram has been only briefly mentioned in our family memoirs so far. He was not notorious nor a combat veteran. Instead, Hiram is felt strongly in the background watching as a guardian over the affairs of his family members. He strikes us as being one of few, but meaningful words.
Hiram was one of the youngest children of Samuel Bills (1777-1840). He was born between 1824 and 1828 in the state of New York. (The 1870 Federal Census, Nankin Township, Michigan, states he was 45 years old 1824/1825) and his death certificate in 1872 shows age 44 (1827/1828).) We don't know the accurate identity of his mother at his time, except that an "Annie" is listed on his death certificate. His older brothers were (Ira (1809-1895), Alvah (1812-1900) and William (1819-1900). Other brothers were Albert and Samuel, and possible brothers (or uncles) Syman of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Marvin of Grand Rapids. He had two sisters--Sally, of Branch County, and Eunice of Milwaukee. (Samuel Bill Will, Wayne County Probate Records, Volume 3, Record 2190)
Hiram married Sabrina sometime before1860. (Wayne County Land Records, Volume 36, P. 15) Again, we do not know much about his marriage, except that in 1860 he had a daughter named Hannah J. Who was five years old. Not listed is Hiram Bills who is buried in Maplegrove Cemetery in Nankin Township. This Hiram died at age 19 in April, 1873, and could have been a son.
Hiram, as his brother Ira, was also a land buyer. Before 1848, he had over 65 acres of land in what is not Nankin Township. He purchased some from his brother William in 1844, and 65 acres in 1848 from a Nehimiah F. Prudden.(Wayne County Land Records, and Volume 14, P. 19, and Vol 18, p. 21) He had a small estate.
Just before his death in Nankin on Aril 9, 1872, at age 44, Hiram was worth $3,300 in real estate and $850 in personal estate.(1870 Federal Census, Nankin Township, Wayne Co., Michigan) He was pretty well off for a person in the period. He died a young man; it seems too bad, particularly for some family members such as Ira and his son, Edmond. They relied on Hiram for stability. It was he to whom Marshall and Edmond gave their bounties for enlistment for use for nursing services for their sick father. They could trust Uncle Hiram to take good care of their father.
Another testimony to Hiram's respectability was his witness as best man to the marriage of Francis L. Strong and Laura E. Guest of Nankin on July 1, 1869. They were not relatives, but friends and neighbors who respected him enough to ask him to perform this favor for them.
We close this brief study of Hiram hoping that we car learn more about him in time. He was probably very quiet but steady. His land transactions and personal wealth impress us. We will break the silence of this man soon, we hope."
