Sir Thomas Paine, knight, of Market Bosworth was born about 1400, and held a Crest, which according to the rules governing such matters, indicated he was a descendant of Sir Hugh. He married Margaret Poultney, daughter of William Poultney, who was Earl of Bath. Sir Thomas's manor was extended into Essex, Norfolkshire and Suffolkshire. Interpretation

BEND:Divides shield into two parts.
RAGULY:Notched in regular, oblique breaks, emblematic of difficulties encountered.

COTISED:A diminutive of the Chevron. No distinctive meaning, but added to lend variety
OTTER:Nothing mentioned, but in old illustrations animals appear similar (Beavers and Otters).
BEAVER:Industrious and patient.
CHEVRON: Likened unto the roof of a house, emblematic of one who protects the defenseless, or builds fortresses or churches for his contry.
STAR:Means that this branch of the family descends from the third son of the man granted the coat.

1540, and undoubtedly lived at Market Bosworth. He married Elisabeth,
daughter of Robert Walton of Leistershire. His son, and heir, William, a
grandson of Sir Thomas, removed to Suffolk, and took up his residence at
Hengrave, carrying with him his father's coat of arms, which became known
as the "Paine of Hengrave arms".

(date the will was proved).

THOMAS PAYNE (D), of Great Ellingham, near Hingham, Norfolk County,
England, was born probably between 1480 and 1490. He married
Margaret____________ (died after 1655). Thomas died between July 11,
1555, when he made his will, and October 4, 1555, when it was proved.
The will gives us the names of his wife, children, and some
grandchildren, as well as a sister, and describes the land held by the
family.
