Charles the Great ruled so many lands that he was called different titles by his many languaged peoples. Carolus Magnus, Karl der Grosse, Charlemagne, Charles the Great. He ruled during the dark ages, a bright star that scholars were inspired by for centuries. Charles inherited only part of his kingdom from his father, less than half of France and the low countries. Before he died he had conquered half of Europe, Italy, Germany and Spain. He held the title, King of France, from 768 till his death in 814. He held the title King of the Lombards (Italy) from 774 to 800. He gained the title of King of Germany in 785. He was the Frankish Emporer from 800-814. In a Christmas Day ceremony in Rome in the year 800, he was crowned Roman Emperor of the West by Pope Leo III.
A very religious man, he was the first to be called the Holy Roman Emperor. He dearly loved his children, and would not even allow his daughters to marry out of court. He built a palace swimming pool and loved to hunt. He valued learning and brought in many artists and scholars as well as opened schools. Most classical literature was preserved during this period thanks to him.
(C-571, 1878, 2247) Charles had four wives and up to five mistresses resulting in 16 children. :(C-1351) He died on Jan. 28, 813/814 in Aachen, Rhine, Prussia and was buried at the Cathedral of Aachen known as Aix-la-Chapelle in France (now Germany). His palace and home were in Aix-la-Chapelle as well. A traditional story about Charlemagne's gravesite is that in the year 1000, Otto III opened Charlemange's Tomb and found him seated in a marble chair. He removed the marble thrown and it was used for the coronation of the Emperor's for hundreds of years after.

BIOGRAPHY: Louis I (Holy Roman Empire), called 'The Pious' (778-840). He was the son and sole successor of Charlemagne. In 817 Louis made plans for an orderly succession among his sons: Lothair I, Louis II (Louis the German), and Pepin of Aquitaine. Later he wanted to include in the succession Charles II (Charles the Bald), his son by a second marriage. Dissatisfied, his older sons rebelled (830, 833) against him and fought among themselves for supremacy as well. Louis "the Pious" first reformed the court in a "moral purge" by sending all of the unmarried princesses to nunneries and sending Charlemagne's three illegitimate sons to monasteries. He then put down a rebellion in Ita ly. When his wife, Irmengard/Ermengard, died, he remarried "Black Judith" of the Alamanic race of the Welfs. He'd already made his three sons, Pepin, Loui s, and Lothar his successors. However, when his son, Charles, was born in 823 , he tried desperately to include him in the succession. In 829, he dropped L othar's imperial title as co-Emperor and sent him off to Italy. The next year , the three brothers united and attacked their father, forcing him to abdicate . They demanded that Lothar be given back his imperial title and they sent Ju dith off to a nunnery. By 831, however, Louis the Pious managed to regain his power, bring back his wife, drop Lothar completely from his will and replace him with Charles, and refused to allow Lothar to ever return to court without permission. That same year, Pepin of Aquitaine revolted on his own and Louis o f Bavaria followed the next year. Emperor Louis declared that Pepin was form ally deposed of his titles, but he could not enforce this order. In 833, the three brothers gained support from Pope Gregory IV and many of the Emperor's o wn generals. Lothar made a settlement; Louis and Charles were imprisoned; Jud ith was sent in exile to Italy under the eye of Lother; Louis of Bavaria and P epin of Aquitaine were to gain territory that was formally under imperial auth ority. By 834 Pepin and Louis released their father and brother from jail, Ju dith was brought back, and peace was made. In 835, Louis was re-crowned with great pomp. Aethelwulf, also spelled ETHELWULF (d. 858), Anglo-Saxon king in England, the father of King Alfred the Great. As ruler of the West Saxons from 839 to 856, he allied his kingdom of Wessex with Mercia and thereby withstood invasions by Danish Vikings.
The son of the great West Saxon king Egbert (ruled 802-839), Aethelwulf ascended the throne four years after the Danes had begun large-scale raids on the English coast. In 851 he scored a major victory over a large Danish army at a place called Aclea in Surrey. Aethelwulf then married his daughter to the Mercian king Burgred (853), and in 856 he himself married the daughter of Charles II the Bald, king of the West Franks. Aethelwulf was deposed by a rival faction upon his return from a pilgrimage to Rome in 856, but he continued to rule Kent and several other eastern provinces until his death.
