d was present at the Battle of Poitiers. In recognition of his conduct in the French wars, he was summoned to Parliament as a baron in 1357. At the same time, he also became a Knight of the Garter.

He was a friend and patron of Jean Froissart[1] and the eldest brother of Henry le Despenser, Bishop of Norwich.

There is a statue of him on the top of the Holy Trinity Chantry Chapel in Tewkesbury Abbey, renowned as the "KNEELING KNIGHT".

BARONY OF HASTINGS (VIII, 9) 1396

SIR EDWARD HASTINGES, knight, of Elsing, Fenwick, &c., de jure LORD HASTINGS, next brother and heir, born at Fenwick, and bap. at Campsale, 21 May 1382. He was knighted before 6 November 1399, on which date the King granted him ?40 a year, during his minority, that he might maintain his estate. On 11 July 1403 he was committed to the Tower. On 10 February 1403/4 he released to the King all his right in Sutton Scotney. In 1405 he was about to go to sea on the King's service with Thomas of Lancaster, Admiral of England. The right to bear the undifferenced Arms of Hastinges was decided against him in the Court of Chivalry, 9 May 1410, and in favour of his opponent Reynold, Lord Grey of Ruthin, heir to the sister of the whole blood, in preference to his own claim as heir to the brother of the half-blood, of John, Lord Hastinges, ancestor of the Earls of Pembroke. From this decision he appealed, but finally, on refusing to pay the costs of this suit (lest he should thereby acknowledge its justice), he was imprisoned (about 1417) in the Marshalsea apparently till his death. On 11 February 1410/1, as Edward, Lord of Hastynges and Stoutvile, he was pardoned his outlawry for not appearing to answer touching a debt. Previous to the Coronation of Henry V he unsuccessfully claimed to carry the Second Sword before the King at his Coronation, and also to carry the Great Gilt Spurs, and to perform the office of Chief Napperer. On 20 November 1413 he was again committed to the Tower.

He married, 1stly, Muriel, daughter of Sir John DE DINHAM, of Hartland, Devon. He married, 2ndly, Margery, daughter of Sir Robert CLIFTON, of Bokenham, Norfolk, by Alice his wife. He died 6 January 1437/8, aged 55. His widow married, as 1st wife, John WYMONDHAM or WYNDHAM, of Felbridge and Runton, Norfolk, who died 4 June 1475. BARONY OF FERRERS OF CHARTLEY (CP doesn't give numbers/recognize the title?)

SIR EDMUND FERRERS, of Chartley, &c., usually called LORD FERRERS OF CHARTLEY, son and heir, by 2nd wife, aged 26 and more, or 27 and more, at his father's death. The King took his homage and fealty, and he had livery of his father's lands, 14 April 1413. Soon afterwards, assisted by his brothers, Thomas and Edward, he carried on a sort of private war with the Erdeswikes of Sandon, near Chartley: both parties petitioned Parliament in 2 Henry V, each claiming to be the one aggrieved. In consequence of these and many other lawless occurrences, the King accompanied Chief justice Hankeford to cos. Leicester, Stafford, and Salop, to hear plaints in person. Edmund had been presented for having, on Christmas Day 1413, given liveries of green and white cloth--3 yards apiece--to many persons not of his household: he appeared before the King in Court in June 1414, and eventually obtained a pardon, 24 January 1414/5, for all treasons, murders, and other offences committed up to 8 December, saving murders if any-committed after 19 November, 1414. He accompanied the King to France in August 1415, and was at the siege of Harfleur, August to September, at the battle of Agincourt, 25 October 1415, and at the relief of Harfleur by the Duke of Bedford, August 1416. He accompanied the King to France in August 1417, and was at the siege of Rouen, July 1418 to January 1418/9, being in the division commanded by the Earl of Huntingdon: at that of Melun, July to November 1420, and at that of Meaux, October 1421 to May 1422.

He married Ellen, 2nd daughter and coheir of Thomas Roche, of Castle Bromwich, co. Warwick, by Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir Thomas BIRMINGEHAM, and niece and heir of Sir John BIRMINGEHAM, of Birmingham, co. Warwick, Kingston Bagpuze, Berks, &c. They had livery of that portion of her inheritance which Elizabeth, Lady Clinton, formerly wife of the said Sir John Birmingeham, had held in dower or otherwise, 1 December 1423. He died 17 December 1435. His widow's dower was ordered to be assigned, 7 February 1435/6, the manor of Castle Bromwich, and the moieties of the manors of Whitacre and Birmingham, which he had held in her right as of her inheritance, having been liberated to her, 4 February 1435 /6. She had licence to marry whom she would, for a fine of ?40, 28 August 1436. She married, 2ndly, as 1st wife, before 3 May 1438, Sir Philip CHETEWYND, of Ingestre, co. Stafford, and Grendon, co. Note: Obviously with a death date of 3 Nov 1415 (which happens to be exactly the same as her mother's), this marriage did not last very long (husband Thomas wasn't born until 1400). I don't know whether MCS was questioning the marriage, the death date, or what? MCS was not fully satisfied with something. Ancestral Roots does not give any death date for Philippa; however they do say she is "buried at Norton". A large number of people on World Connect have Philippa's death in 1457/8.

EARLDOM of ARUNDEL (XVIII, 13 or 6) 1415

JOHN D'ARUNDEL, [who, according to the admission of 1433] may be considered Earl of Arundel, cousin and heir male, being son and heir of John d'Arundel, by Elizabeth, daughter of Edward le Despenser, which last named John [who never was summoned as a Baron] was son and heir of John D'Arundel [summoned to Parliament 1377-79], who was brother of the whole blood of Richard [xv] Earl of Arundel. Succeeded his father 14 August 1390, created K.B. 12 October 1399, became de jure Lord Mautravers by the death of his grandfather [suo jure Baroness Mautravers] on 10 January 1404/5, but was never summoned to Parliament as a Baron, though frequently styled Lord Mautravers. He was in the French wars of 1415, in which year he succeeded to the Castle and Honour of Arundel, and according to some authorities, is said to have been summoned to Parliament as Earl of Arundel, 3 September 1416, though [probably owing to the opposition of the great family Mowbray, the heirs gen. of the former Earls of Arundel] never afterwards.

He married, before 1407, Eleanor, daughter of Sir John Berkeley, of Beverstone, co. Gloucester, by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir John Betteshorne, of Betteshorne in Sopley, Hants. He died 21 April 1421, and was buried at Arundel. His widow married, about 1423, Sir Richard Poynings, who was son and heir apparent of Robert, Lord Poynings, but who died v.p., 10 Jun 1429. He [Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Worcester] m. 27 Jul 1411, at Tewkesbury, Isabel, sister and eventually (1414) sole heir of Richard le Despenser, apparently de jure Lord Burghersh, being daughter of Thomas, the attainted Earl of Gloucester (Lord le Despenser), by Constance, daughter of Edmund, Duke of York. He dspm. (being mortally wounded at the siege of Meaux in France, 18 Mar 1421/2), and was buried 25 Apr 1422 in Tewkesbury Abbey. At his death, his vast estates and the representation of his Barony devolved on his only daughter and heir (Elizabeth), but the Earldom of Worcester apparently reverted to the Crown. Worcester, as 2nd wife, her husband's cousin, Richard Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick, who d. 30 Apr, and was buried 4 Oct 1439, at Warwick. M.I. Will dated 8 Aug 1435. She d. 27 Dec 1439, at the Friars Minoresses, London, and was buried 13 Jan 1439/40, in Tewkesbury Abbey. M.I. WIll dated 1 Dec 1439, probated 4 Feb 1439/40. Inq.p.m. at Abingdon, June 1441. He [Richard de Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick] married, 2ndly, 26 November 1423, at Hanley Castle, co. Worcester, Isabel, de jure suo jure (according to modern doctrine) BARONESS BURGHERSH, widow of his cousin Richard (DE BEAUCHAMP), EARL OF WORCESTER (who died s.p.m. March 1422), sister and heir of Richard (LE DESPENSER), de jure LORD BURGHERSH (who died s.p. 7 October 1414), posthumous daughter and eventually sole heir of Thomas (LE DESPENSER), EARL OF GLOUCESTER and LORD LE DESPENSER (who was beheaded, January 1399/1400, and afterwards attainted] by Constance, daughter of Edmund, "of Langley," DUKE OF YORK, 5th son of EDWARD III. He died 30 April 1439 at Rouen, aged 57, and was buried 4 October in St. Mary's, Warwick, being afterwards removed to the Lady Chapel (built by his executors), where is a superb monument to him. His widow, who was born 26 July 1400 at Cardiff, died 27 December 1439 at the Friars Minoresses, London, and was buried 13 January 1439/40 in Tewkesbury Abbey, aged 39. M.I.
