    She was baptized 27 May 1604 at St.Michael's and All Angels Church, then in the Berkshire section of Shalbourne, England, the daughter of John Briant and Alice ____ Briant.

    Some older sources give Abigail's maiden name as Bennett or Searles. The first represents unwarranted linkage to a Bennett family of Sway, Hampshire, and the second reflects apparent confusion with the maiden name of William Carpenter Jr's second wife, Miriam Sale(s).

    She married William Carpenter at St.Michael's and All Angels Church, then in the Berkshire section of Shalbourne, England, on 28 April 1625. The family resided in the Wiltshire section of Shalbourne.

    She and her husband arrived in New England on the "Bevis" in 1638, settling first at Weymouth, Massachusetts, and then, by 1645, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony. Abigail was buried in the Newman Cemetery in Old Rehoboth (now East Providence, Rhode Island) on 22 February 1687.

    Their children: John Carpenter, Abigail Carpenter Titus Palmer, William Carpenter, Joseph Carpenter, Samuel Carpenter, Samuel Carpenter, Hannah Carpenter Carpenter, and Abiah Carpenter.

    William appeared in the will of his grandfather and by the advice of his family, in Deed on 2 September 1674, his estate at Providence, Rhode Island, he sold to his Uncle Stephen Arnold.

    In the DH Carpenter's book on the R.I.Branch
    "William acted as one of the proprietors after the death of his brother Joseph until 1706 when his nephew Joseph reached legal age. The Town Records shows very clearly that he was a large land owner and prominent in the affairs of the plantation.
    He was a blacksmith by trade, and had his homestead and shop in that part of town known as "Duck Pond." He sold this property in 1720, and probably moved to Westchester county, though he still had landed interests at Musketa Cove as late as 1734."

    Benedict Carpenter, son of William, was born June 7, 1717 at Musketa Cove. About 1737 he married Hannah Haviland and settled at Scarsdale, Westchester County. His wife died about 1742, leaving three children. He then married Abigail Horton. Meeting at Purchase says "she died 22d. 12mo. 1764, and was buried at Purchase on the 24th, and a memorial of her was to be sent to the Mamaroneck Meeting." Soon after he married Abigail Ferris, and the Purchase minutes says "Abigail Carpenter ye 3d wife of Benedict Carpenter departed this life 1d. 8mo. 1775, and was buried at Purchase, aged about 55." He for "4th wife" married the widow Elizabeth Wanzer, who survived him. He died at New Milford, Conn., June 22, 1791, aged 74 years and 15 days.
