    Notes:

He had 2 children by Herodias Long: Hannah and Thomas. See his marriage record posted that gives his age as 23 in 1637 and other important data. "The Great Migration Begins" shows this John Hicks was not son of Robert and Margaret Hicks of Plymouth. The Plymouth couple, Robert & Margaret Hicks, made no mention of a son John in their will & they called Samuel their "eldest" son. JOHN HICKS md. 3 times. 1) Herodias Long 2) Florence (unknown) Carman, widow of John Carman and 3) Rachel (unknown) Starr, wid. of Thomas Starr. John Hicks's 2nd and 3rd marriages are confirmed in the "Great Migration Begins" for John Carman, v. 1, A? F, 311. For marriage to widow Rachel (Unknown) Starr see their prenuptial agreement cited below and "A History of the Starr Family, of New England, from the Ancestor, Dr. Comfort Starr...emigrated to Boston, MA, 1635," pp. 4-5. "The Great Migration Begins" shows that this John of L. I. was not the son of Robert Hicks of Plymouth. Robert's son has no record in America and did not come either with Robert or his mother as Plymouth records show. Robert and this John of R.I. and L.I. came to America 15 years apart and went to different locations, were never in the same place and no records suggest any ties. No son John was mentioned in the will of either Robert or Margaret (unknown) Hicks from Plymouth. Their son Samuel was referred to as eldest son. Thus Robert gave no indication that John living over at Flushing & Hempstead, L.I. was his son. It appears that John, son of Robert Hicks died young in England before 1623. First known record for this John Hicks was his marriage record which reads: "Mar. 14, 1637: Wch daie, appeared p[er]sonally John Hicke of ye parish of St. Olaves in Southwark Salter and a batchelour aged about 23 yeares and alledged that he intendeth to marrie with Harwood Long spinster aged about 21 yeares ye daughter of William Long Husbandman who giveth his Consent to this intended marriage And of ye truth of the pr[e]mises as also that he knows of no Lawfull let or impediment by reason of anie pr[ior] contract Consanguinity affinitie or otherwise to hinder this intended marriage he made faith and desires license to be married in ye parish Church of St ffaith London [signed] John Hickes." London Marriage Allegations Vol. 19: pg 92. JOHN HICKS STATED HIS AGE AT MARRIAGE in 1637 as 23 years old: Marriage record of 14 March 1636/7 at St, Faith's, crypt of St. Paul's, London, states his age as 23. This suggests he was born in 1614. There is no proof yet of where he was born, only that he was from the parish of St. Olaves in Southwark by the date of his marriage in March 1636/7. See "London and Surrey, England, Marriage Bonds and Allegations, 1597? 1921, Vol. 19: pg 92, indexed under John Hicke," available at ancestry. This record is also quoted by G. Andrews Moriaty in "Additions and Corrections to Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island (cont'd)," in "The American Genealogist," 39(1963):2, citing London Marriage Licenses, p. 153, British Rec. Soc. Several dates are given for divorce proceedings of John Hicks and Herodias Long in G. Andrews Moriarty, "Herodias (Long) Hicks-Gardiner-Porter a Tale of Old Newporte," in "Rhode Island History," volume 11, no. 3, (July 1952): 85. "On 12 December 1645 John Hicks wrote from Flushing to John Coggeshall at Newport: his side of the story. "[Herbert] Seversmith states that she obtained a divorce from Hicks in Rhode Island on 2 December 1643. On 1 June 1655 John Hicks was granted a divorce from Herodias in the Court at New Amsterdam by Governor Peter Stuyvesant." This is written in Dutch so I won't give it here. "After Hicks went to New Netherland, and possibly before, Herodias went to live with George Gardiner of Newport as his common-law wife and had a numerous family." When John went to Long Island, he took his 2 children with him. Md. 2) Florence unknown, wife of John Carman. See record at Jamaica where the children of John & Florence Carman are petitioning for "John Hicks, who had married their mother, to render an account of her estate. (Calendar of Dutch Mss. of N.Y., p. 223). In Robert Coe Puritan, p. 83, https://archive.org/details/robertcoepuritan00bart/page/82 Third marriage: about Jan. 22, 1662: Pre-nuptial agreement with third wife, widow Rachel Starr: Conditions of an agreement betwixt John Hickes of Hempstead of the one party, And Rachell Starre of Oysterbay of the other Party Jointly and freely agreed upon by both parties before they enter or joyne in Marriage estate, about the settling of their Estates, and for the preventing of Differences betwixt the Children of the said John Hickes and Rachell Starres shall bring to the said John Hickes of her owne (being taken upon Inventory) If it please God to take her away first by Death, that then ye said estate which Shee brought to ye said John Hickes shall return to ye children of ye sd Rachell Starre. And further it is agreed upon between them, that it it shall please God that their estate shall or Do increase that then the said increase shall equally bee divided, the one half to him and his children, the other half to her and her children, at the death of either of them. And further the sd John Hickes Doth give to the sd Rachel Starre (in case hee Die first) During her widowhood, the house and lands and Meddowe belonging to it and Six Cows, Foure Oxen, with the instrument of husbandry belonging to them, with so much of the housald stuff as she shall think meet for her Necessary use and a good horse for her use. In witness whereoff wee do Mutually hereunto set our hands the day and yeare before specified. Testes Richard Gildersleeve John Hickes Robert Ashman Rachell Starre Jonas Houldsworth "Records of the Towns of North and South Hempstead, Long Island," v. 1, 119? 120. John Hicks mentions 2 children in his will, Thomas and Hannah, wife of William Haviland, and a son-in-law Josias Starr who was a son of his 3rd wife Rachel. Some have thought this implies there was a third child of John Hicks, a daughter who md. Josiah Starr. Will of John Hicks made 29 April 1673, cited in "The Haviland Genealogy" by Josephine C. Frost, pp 27? 28. According to NEHGS, Josiah Starr md. a Rebecca and began the Danbury Starr branch https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/early-new-england-families-1641-1700/image?pageName=5&volumeId=13727. Torrey's New England Marriages before 1700 does cite a marriage between Josiah and Elizabeth Hicks of Hempstead although Torrey is frequently in error when he passes on errors copied from other people's interpretations. His source is a finding aid that is useful place to start but needs serious verifying by looking at all the evidence in persons' other records.
