    You'll find several sources for the parents connection, besides just the mention of John being related to William, here are other sites posting William as his father: (from 2000) and Ancestral files from 1998, , 1/3 down the page at , etc.
    For a very detailed look at the Brewster line and documentation, you may have seen William L. Decoursey's work at which has more information, but nothing definative on the above connection that I noticed.

    Conclusion: Parents of John are not clearly defined and we cannot say conclusively William and Prudence are these parents due to differing opinions.
