At the orders of her brother, she was devoted to virginity, a situation she did not find to her liking. Circa 449 she was apprehended in a love affair with the overseer of her estates; both supposedly were engaged in a plot to seize power for Honoria. As a result, her lover was executed and she was exiled to Constantinople. She then appealed for help to Attila the Hun, at which the eastern emperor Theodosius II, who already had enough problems with the Huns, immediately dispatched her back to Italy -- with the recommendation that Valentinian turn her over to Attila. Valentinian, meanwhile, was enraged, and only spared her life because of the earnest entreaties of their mother. She then was compelled to marry a reliable senator named Flavius Bassus Herculanus and subsequently she was kept under close guard.

During his reign, much of the Western Empire was ravaged by invaders; Africa was seized (429) by Gaiseric, king of the Vandals, and the Danubian provinces, Gaul, and Italy were overrun (441) by Attila, king of the Huns. Aetius won a great victory over Attila in 451 at Chalons-sur-Marne (modern Chalons-en-Champagne), Gaul. Alaric II (died 507), king of the Visigoths (484-507), succeeding his father, Euric. He ruled the central and southern regions of Gaul (modern-day France) and most of Spain. Like most Visigoths, Alaric adhered to Arianism; this gave the Frankish king Clovis I, an orthodox Christian, an excuse for making war on him. Alaric's forces were completely routed at Vouill?, near Poitiers (in present-day France), and he himself was overtaken and slain by Clovis. Breviary of Alaric, also known as Lex Romana Visigothorum (Roman Law of the Visigoths), important collection of Roman laws compiled under Alaric II, king of the Visigoths. Issued in AD506 at Toulouse (now in France), the code was designed for Alaric's Roman subjects and was almost exclusively Roman in character. It was derived from the Code and Novels of the Roman emperor Theodosius II (AD401-50), the Institutes of the Roman jurist Gaius (circa AD110-80), and other authorities.
