I found Johann's birth record of 8-Dec-1740 soon, and after a lot of additional searching one of his sisters, Anna in Feb.1745. Among her godmothers is an aunt, and her grandfather Friedrich Riedweil is noted also as citizen of Freckenfeld. I copied these 2 records, and I will try to deciper them, and to translate what I can read. I checked up to 1750, but I did not find more RIEDWEILs (except maybe one as godmother). Before 1738, there seems to be no hope in that archive. Regards - Georg

The next part on the film were the christenings 1738-1779, records were searched from 1738 to 1760, following were the christenings 1722-1737, both sections were searched also death records from 1738-1751, and the following entries were listed: Johann David BAECHLER and wife Magdalene had the following children:

thank you for your email again. I think I could look for some of the dates which you mentioned in the 1730-1750 time frame, and to get record photocopies in the archive for these. I will have to make my picture myself, and better print out all what you sent me, but I cannot do this here in Frankfurt. Regarding the castle: "Russ" would be a very strange German christian name. If he was knightened, they would have any form of title in their name, "von", "zu" "Graf", "Baron" or the like. They underwrote with quite an ordinary signature, so I doubt that for Friedrich's line. I doubt that you can find a castle of your anchestors. At that time, they were rather well known, with their owning families. BTW, in German there is only "Friedrich". Frederick, Frederic are the English and French versions thereof.
It is reported in a book that a census was done 27th May 1709 at Walworth England of the Palatine population lately from Germany and in England at that time. This is what is given:" Frederick Ritweil, age 32, wife , son age 2, Lutheran; and Jacob Ritweil, age 22, single, Lutheran. They are listed as Husbandmen & Vinedressers. "

Okay, these names could fit, but not the time: 1709 ? That would mean that the Grandfather Friedrich left Germany long before his grandson Johann Ludwig was born ? Georg what does that last part in the above mean ?
I would say: the were married vine growers.

The John B. 1756 is sometimes confused with the above metioned Johann B. 1737. Our best guess is that Johnannes B. 1737 either stayed in Germany or died before or during the trip to America.
the christening record of Maria Dorothea Grimm, daughter of Jacob and Magdalena Grimm in May 1729, it lists Johann Ludwig Riedweyl as an apprentice weaver, single, and son of Friedrich Riedweyl (Doc. #6). Also in christening record of his second child Johannes, Ludwig Sr. is listed as a yarn weaver, Doc.# 3 but elsewhere, as just a weaver.

On Dec. 8th was J.L. Riedweil's ["ens" is possessive grammar form], citizen and ?? here and his wife's Barbara little son, which was born 4th the same month [latin] baptized and Johann Ludwig named, bapt. witnesses were J.L. I cannot translate "Ehel:" properly without my dictionary,
it means that they were born by a marriaed couple.
The faint cross over the record would indicate that somebody else noted later that the child died (soon?), that occurs rather often, together with a year. But I'm not sure about this, and the write put a question mark also.
The name RIEDWEIL is rather clear, except that in the
signature it's RIDWEIL.

1749 - In the summer of 1749, a man by the name of Landenberger of Ebingen, who made frequent trips between Germany and America, brought back favorable letters from Hans Balthass Bitzer and Matthaeus Mautte. According to a report in 1749 by Mayor Venninger of Lauffen, preserved at Ludwigsburg, the letters are said to have "made such an impression among different families, that they even now appear to be intent on leaving next Spring." This resulted in the large Lauffen emigration of 1750, including some on the ship "Osgood."

1750 - PA, Philadelphia 29 Sept., The ship 'Osgood' arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam, last from Cowes; William Wilkie, Captain, listed 480 [ or 180 "not sure"] passengers. Ludwig Readwile and Joh. Michael Rietweill were among those passengers.
Ludwig RIETHWEIL and his family most likely were taken to the court house where he then made his mark on the Oath of Allegiance and qualified, as well as his son Michael who was able to sign his name. Since Michael was over the age of 16, he had to qualify. The other children were under the age of 16, so were not required to qualify. Michael signed his name Rietweill to the document. Ludwig did not sign the document, but made his mark "LRW" and the spelling of the surname as "Readwile" is most likely a phonetic one by the court clerk.
1760 - 15 Aug 1760 Lodwick REDWINE of Granville County, North Carolina, for fifty pounds proclamation money, purchased from William Meadows of Orange County, 233 acres located eastward of Michael Peeler's and on the branches of Shillons (now Shelton's) Creek. 1766 - Lodwick Redwine was listed on the tax list of Granville Co North Carolina. The list was made by John Thomas and the number of polls paid has been blurred and not readable.
1767 - Lodwick Redwine was on the tax list of Granville Co NC when he paid one poll.
1767 - NC Granville Co. deed book H (1765-1826) page, 364 Lodwick Redwine of Granville Co. records land deed August 15, 1767 from William Medows of Orange Co. NC.

1772 - NC, Aug The inventory of Lodwick Redwine was recorded into Granville County Court in August 1772 which means he died between 22 Feb 1772 and Aug 1772. The inventory included the 233 acres of land he purchased in 1760. In this document, his name was shown with three different spellings, Lodwick Redwine; Lewis Riethweil; & Lodowick Redwine.
Obviously, the son named John who was underage in 1772 was not the same Johannes who was baptized 5 May 1737. In Mittelberger's diary, he said there were no less than 32 that died on the 'Osgood.' Freckenfeld belongs in the federal German state of Rheinland-Pfalz. Freckenfeld belongs to Kreis Germersheim, RegBez Rheinhessen-Pfalz, Land Rheinland-Pfalz The AGS is 07334005. The ZIP code is 76872

1738 - 1779 Germany, ( Bavarian - Pfalz ) Freckenfeld Parish. 1740 the 8th December, John Ludwig Riedweiler, citizen and weaver here, and his wife Barbara had a son christened, who was born on the 4th of December and named Johann Ludwig.
Christening witnesses were: Johan Ludwig Apfel, legitimate son of deceased Theobaldt Apflen - former citizen here. Anna Apolonia, legitimate daughter of Friedrich Riedweiler - citizen here. Both witnesses were unmarried. We witness: Ludwig Riedweil as Father and Ludwig Apfel as Godfather, Christian Melchlor Fischer, Minister.
Anna Apolonia was married 10 May 1753 to Johann Christian Apfel according to a public decree (Doc.#7) . Apparently they were required to be married before they could leave, and they left the 12th of May for America. In the article,
Emigration to the North American Colonies in the 18th Century from the Lutheran Church-book of Freckenfeld by Fr. Krebs (1952) it has the following paragraph about Christian Apffel (translated here by me) (Doc.#8)
1. Christian Apffel, chr. 28 October 1722 at Freckenfeld, as the son of Hans Erhard Apffel, citizen at Freckenfeld and his wife Anna Maria. Married 10 May 1753 at Freckenfeld to Anna Apollonia Riedweil. (Married 1753 the 10th of May; left for the New Land the 12th of the same month and year).
It was very interesting to find that the father of Ludwig and Anna Appolonia Riedweil, Friedrich Riedweil died as a poor man in Freckerifeld 23 January 1753 (Doc.#9). It seems that Anna Appolonla may have been taking care of her father until his death and shortly thereafter left for America where her brother was residing.

I have listed below parts from three email message about Anna Apolonia who Dr. Georg says is an aunt.
The first part below of course is from Dr. Georg and I think the Palmer email message below that were he starts Now turning to the German Records at his #2 record... I have it listed below.
I think Pallmer solves the question for us at least for the time being and gives us a logical place to record the aunt in our data base.
I would like to know if any of you are thinking in the same way that I am thinking...that Anna Apolonia is the very young sister of Lewis Redwine Sr. I propose to list her that way until such time that the source data would prove other wise.

Steinfelss.
2. Anna Appolonia Riedweilin, oo Freckenfeld 10.v.1753: Johann Christian Apffel.

The Bible I am working from is known to have once belonged to Martha Jane Redwine daughter of Daniel L. Redwine. On the copy we see it appears to this researcher to have been written in the same hand. If the person copying this had no first hand information as to what the name were that she copied or what they should have been or the way the letters of the time were formed this could be how the name Saloma could be transcribed or extracted as Polma or some other form of it.

1774 - PA, Lewis REDWINE married ? WALTER(S) in PA. With a marriage date of 28 Aug. 1774. Source: Martha Redwine Nelson's book asks in her book is this the same Lewis that is named in the will of Johann Ludwig Sr. ?
Bear in mind that as far as I know to this date, no source has been found for the KINGSLEY or WALTER marriage.
I have no source or proof that the children of Lewis Redwine Jr. that I display are correct. I have removed the child I did display named Hut. This serves as a note that there could be a child by that name.
The child named Wilis that I display could be a short or nickname for William. The date of birth on the two names are not the same. I don't know if those dates are correct or guessed at. They could be the same person but I have seen these two names in the same family as being seperate people. For now I will display Willis as a child of LRJ.
In Ms. Nelson book in the chapter named "others" She shows that a Lewis REDWINE served in the War of 1812, with Bradley's Regiment, Virginia Militia, as a Private. D card No. 38888753. It did not appear that she had ordered the records for this person. Check Mecklenburg and Russell Co.,VA as well as the above record.

1768 Lodwick Redwine was on the tax list of Granville Co., NC as shown in tithables taken by Robert Harris. He paid two polls which included son Jacob Redwine shown. The law at the time in NC set the white male poll at ages 16 and upward.
Jacob would have reached age 16 in October 1767.
1772 - NC, Granville Co., 22 Feb 1772 Lewis RIETHWEIL (signed in German Ludwig) wrote his will in Granville County naming sons Lewis, Michael, Jacob, John, and daughter Margaret Peeler, wife of Michael Peeler. The youngest son, John, was underage at that time. His wish was that son John was to serve his brother Jacob but for one year, then to be declared free.
Obviously, the son named John who was underage in 1772 was not the same Johannes who was baptized 5 May 1737. It is most likely the first son named Johannes had died (perhaps before leaving Germany, or on board ship, or after arrival in America) and the same name was given to another son born later. That was not an unusual custom and happened often. In Mittelberger's diary, he said there were no less than 32 died on the 'Osgood.'
1777 - NC, 25 Jan 1777 Jacob Reitweil and John Rietwel of Granville County sold 233 acres eastward of Michael Peelers on a branch of Shelton's Creek, being part of a large survey taken up by William Meadows and adjoining Slaughter. Proved in

Said to be one hundred years after his death. For better directions to the site look under Whorton Ballard in my data base.
To get to this cemetery, starting from the intersection of Main St. or State route 29 on the South side of Palmetto GA and Tommy Lee Cook Road. Take Tommy Lee Cook Rd. West about 3 miles out and west of Palmetto. turn left on Gosdine Rd. then back to the left on Ousley Rd about .5 miles down Gosdine Rd. Turn left off Gosdine onto this dead-end dirt Rd. Go a few hundred yards to the end of the road were Mr. Murray Mayfield (770-463-2110) now lives.

1756 - NC, Rowan Co., John Redwine b. ca 1756; d. 1800 Rowan Co. NC; m. Sarah Steiner (Schriner or Shiver or Skinner), b. ca 1761; d. ca 1824. David Redwine is stated to be his youngest son. Other children unknown. He is also known to have had a great grandson, Lingurn Redwine. We know that John could write, owned books, and land in Rowan County. He died without leaving a will. He and his wife, Sarah, are buried side by side in a cemetery on the west bank of the Yadkin River.

I have some info. on the Redwine family. My ggggg grandfather, John Redwine, was born in Pittsburgh, PA on 29 Sept. 1739 and moved to Montgomery Co., NC sometime before his death in 1800. He was married to Sarah Skinner Shriver but I don't have any info. on her. I don't know if she was from NC or PA. One of their children was my gggg grandmother Charlotte Redwine. She was born around 1760 and died 1848. She married Joseph Ellis in 1786 in Montgomery Co. NC. I have more info. on the Redwine family before they moved to Montgomery Co. One source gives the date of birth 1 Mar 1775 and as I understand it is from her grave marker. I had it recorded as 1 Mar 1781 and I think that is right but I have no source data. I talked with Martha Redwine Nelson by phone and she has changed it in her records to 1 Mar 1775.

Sarah FREEMAN married Moses STAMPS 5 Dec 1826. This info from the Coweta Chronicles.
Sara is believed to have been born about 1806. Her tombstone reads Sarah Stamps Redwine, w/o Moses Stamps and Jacob REDWINE, aged 76 years.
The marriage to Jacob Redwine is recorded GA, Coweta Co, Book C, page 539. Jacob REDWINE to Mrs. Sarah Stamps 31, Jan 1865.
This would make the marriage 25 years after Jacob (s/o Ludwig) had died. Since Jacob Jr. didn't die until 1866, I guess he could have married her in 1865.

This family has disappeared with noone knowing anything about them. Were they renegades or something? Were they deadbeats? Did they not have any association with the Redwine family? What is going on? How can family live and go to church with each other and then just poof-disappear? Nancy Trimble Redwine was a charter member of Mt. Gilead Methodist Church, 1824.
I just do not know or understand.

Everyone knows all about these Redwine's. Noone seem to know about James Oliver Redwine-son of Jacob Redwine and his family. James Oliver married Elizabeth Hathcock and from there all seems to be lost. The Redwine that I am searching for is Jacob Alonzo Redwine who married Rebecca Jane Kleckley (Sarah) Derick/Derrick in Henry County, GA. This family was visiable enough in Fulton County to have a road named for them. They lived on this road. Part of this road is now abandoned and you are unable to access it by car. You are able to walk down it to a point and even the drive that led to Andrew Redwine's, son of Jacob Alonzo, house is still there. Redwine Lake is still there and people park on Camp Creek Parkway and fish in it. The other part of this road leads into the city of EastPoint, GA. No-one lives on the closed part of this road and no one seems to know who owns the property.
Noone knows where this family or any of their descendents. They are just names on paper. Even the families that still attend Mt. Gilead Methodist Church either do not know or are unwilling to talk about this family. Some are even related to them. One woman Fannie Kate Cash is the cousin of Andrew Redwine, son of Jacob Alonzo, g son of James Oliver. Their grandmothers were sisters. How do families disappear? What happens to their descendents? Why are relatives reluctant to talk about them? Shirley

1880 - Whitfield Co., GA the Mortality census of 1880 for Cove City dist of Whitfield Co., GA recorded Michael's death that occured during the past year. The Mortality census lists Michael at age 83 being born in GA his parents were born in NC.
Michael had moved to the Cove forty years before. He died of Dropsy of the head. Certificate was signed by Dr. C.P. Gordon.

In the war with Britain in 1814, John Marshburn Redwine served as a private in Captain Joseph Whorton's company in the Jackson County, Georgia Militia. His service is listed as January 5 - February 15, 1814. This per information found in the Redwine family file at the Georgia Archives.
In Deeds of GA, Franklin Co., 1784-1826, by Martha Acker, I find these entries concerning John Marshburn Redwine: "DEED dated Franklin Co., 4 Nov. 1817, rec. 4 Aug. 1824, from William Hall of afore said to JOHN REDWINE of same. In cons. of $25, conveys 71 ac. in Franklin Co. on north side of Rice Crk., adj. John Groover and said Hall. Wit: Joshua Hearne, Andrew Shelnut. Sworn to by Hearne before Richard C. Bond, J.P. 1 Sept. 1821.
(P.444 in text.) "DEED dated Franklin Co., 4 Nov. 1817, rec. 4 Aug. 1824, from William Hall to JOHN REDWINE. In cons. of $70, conveys 29 ac. in Franklin Co. in the fork of Rice Crk., on Barnet's old line, being part of land granted to said Hall.

It should be noted that the Index to the 1820 Georgia census has John Redwine living in Madison County. This is more that likely correct as John may have had land adjoining Madison and Franklin counties.
In 1830, John Redwine is living in Coweta County, Georgia. he died there in the city of Palmetto on November 25, 1841.
The middle name of John came from the files of Becki Redwine.
