Upon Clotaire's birth, his mother had his father assassinated and ruled Neustrie in his name. He became King of Soissons in 584, and was sole King of the Franks in 613. He had his aunt Brunehaut (sister of hisfather's second wife) killed. In the year 596, through his mother Fredegonde, Clotaire II's territories were extended in the East. In 599, King Theodebert II of Austrasia and King Thierry II of Burgundy joinedforces to take revenge upon Clotaire II. The Army of Neustria is beatten and the entire valley of the Seine is devastated. As a result, ThierryII's territory increased by taking away from Clotaire II, the lands between the Seine and the Loire. Theodebert II takes the lands of the Duchy of Dentelin. In 604, the Mayor of the Palace, Bertaut arouses the subjects against the King of Burgundy and they call on Clotaire II for help. On Christmas Day, 604, Clotaire rushes to their aid and crosses the Seine and pushes all to way to Orleans. On his return, he encounters an Army of Bourgogne, and is defeated at Etampes at which battle Bertaut is killed. Because Theodebert had not intervened, actually he had made peace in Compiegne with Clotaire II, Thierry II took offense and the two brothers became less than thrilled with each other. Brunehaut, unhappy with Theodebert, names as next Mayor of the Palace a Gallo-Roman named Protadius. In 607, she pushed Thierry II to take up arms against his brother. During the battle, Protadius is killed and the two brothers make peace, humiliating their mother, Brunehaut. By 612, the brothers again were at war and Thierry II purchases Clotaire's neutrality by offering him the Duchy of Dentelin. In 613 Clotaire II invades Austrasia upon the death of Thierry II, kills two of Thierry's sons [the other twodisappear] , and has Brunehaut killed after the lords of Burgundy seizeher and give her to him. At her "trial" Clotaire II had accused Brunehaut of having caused the death of ten frankish Kings:
1. Sigebert her first spouse, who was assassinated [though through nofault of Brunehaut] ;
2. Merovee, the son of Chilperic I [who was actually assassinated on theorders of Fredegonde] ;
3. Chilperic [killed in 584, and through no part from Brunehaut] ;
4. Theodebert II
5. of his son Clotaire [it is possible that Brunehaut had Cloraireassassinated after he deserted her] ;
6. Merovee, son of Clotaire II [highly doubtful that Brunehaut had a partin this murder] ;
7. Thierry II and his three sons [Thierry died of dysentery, and 8-10.his three sons were massacred on the order of Clotaire II himself]. For3 days, Clotaire II personally tortures Brunehaut, then he parades hertied cross-wise to the back of a camel in front of his entire assembledarmy. Finally, he had her hair, and limbs tied to a wild horse which wasallowed to run within a confined space while being beaten, therebyecausing every limb to be broken and shortly thereafter she died at age 60to 65. At this time, Clotaire II becomes the only surviving descendant ofthe sons of Clovis. He governs the Frankish Kingdom from the Pyrenees tothe Rhine and beyond all the way to the Elbe, and the germanic peoplesmust pay him tribute. However, his power is limitted as in each of thethree ancient kingdoms [Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy] the Major Domus[Mayor of the Palace] becomes progressively more important. Submitting tothe pressure of these mayors, Clotaire, Clotaire II on 23 January 623makes his son Dagobert, King of occidental Austrasia [West of the Vosgesand the Ardennes] as well as of Aquitaine. Again under pressure, in 626,Clotaire gives Dagobert Gomatrude [his wife's sister] as spouse. Threedays after the wedding, Dagobert claims all of Austrasia was his, butClotaire keeps control over Provence and Aquitaine. Married before 603:Bertrude . King of Soissons 584-613 & King of the Franks 613-629 - When his father,King Chilperic I of Soissons died in 584, Chlotar was not yet even born.Until 597, his kingdom was administered by his mother, Queen Fredegund,but when she died that year he bagan to rule for himself, now 13 yearsold. In 613, the Austrasian and Burgundian kings, Theudebert II andTheuderic II respectively, had died, and Queen Brunhild had placed theyoung Sigebert II on the throne of those two kingdoms. That year, the 29year old Chlotar had Sigebert and Brunhild killed, and became the firstking of all the Franks since his grandfather Chlotar I died in 561. In615, Chlotar passed the Edict of Paris, a sort of French Magna Carta thatgreatly pleased the nobles across the kingdom. In 623, he gave thekingdom of Austrasia to his young son Dagobert I, which was a politicalmove giving Pepin I, Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, and Bishop Arnulfof Metz, the two leading Austrasian nobles, semi-autonomy for theirloyalty to Chlotar. In 629, Chlotar died and Dagobert became sole king,moving his capital from Austrasia to Paris.

Dagobert was the eldest son of Chlothar II and Haldetrude (575? 604) and the grandson of Fredegund. Chlothar had reigned alone over all the Franks since 613. In 622, Chlothar made Dagobert king of Austrasia, almost certainly to bind the Austrasian nobility to the ruling Franks. As a child, Dagobert lived under the care of the Carolingian dynasty forebears and Austrasian magnates, Arnulf of Metz and Pepin of Landen.

Chlothar attempted to manage the unstable alliances he had with other noble families throughout much of Dagobert's reign.[8] When Chlothar granted Austrasia to Dagobert, he initially excluded Alsace, the Vosges, and the Ardennes, but shortly thereafter the Austrasian nobility forced him to concede these regions to Dagobert. The rule of a Frank from the Austrasian heartland tied Alsace more closely to the Austrasian court. Dagobert created a new duchy (the later Duchy of Alsace) in southwest Austrasia to guard the region from Burgundian or Alemannic encroachments and ambitions. The duchy comprised the Vosges, the Burgundian Gate, and the Transjura. Dagobert made his courtier Gundoin? who incidentally established monasteries in Alsace and Burgundy? the first duke of this new polity that was to last until the end of the Merovingian dynasty. While Austrasian rulers such as Chlothar and Dagobert controlled these regions through part of the seventh-century, they eventually became autonomous kingdoms as powerful aristocratic families sought separate paths across their respective realms.[

Sigebert was born in 629-630 as the eldest son of Dagobert I, King of the Franks, and his concubine Ragnetrude. The king recalled and made peace with Saint Amand, who was previously banished for criticizing the king's vices, and asked him to baptize his new-born son. The ceremony was performed at Orl?ans and Charibert II, Dagobert's half-brother who was King of Aquitaine at the time, was the god-father. Dagobert assigned the education of Sigebert to Pepin of Landen, who was the mayor of the palace in Austrasia under his father Chlotar II, until 629. Pepin took the young Sigebert and moved with him to his domains in Aquitane, where they stayed the next three years.

In 633, a revolt of the nobles forced Dagobert to make the three-year old Sigebert king of Austrasia, similar to how his father Chlotar II had made him king of Austrasia in 623. However, he refused to give the power to Pepin of Landen by making him mayor of the palace for the child-king. Instead he had put Sigebert under the tutelage of Adalgisel as mayor of the palace and the Bishop of Cologne Saint Cunibert as regent, while keeping Pepin in Neustria as hostage. In 634 Dagobert's second son, Clovis II, was born, and the king forced the nobles to accept him as the next king of Neustria and Burgundy, setting up a new division of the empire.

On the death of Dagobert in 639, the two Frankish kingdoms became independent once again under Sigebert III and Clovis II. Both kingdoms were under child-kings ? Sigebert was around eleven years old and Clovis was five ? and were ruled by the respective regents. It was under Seigbert's reign that the mayor of the palace began to play the most important role in the political life of Austrasia, and he has been described as the first roi fain?ant? do-nothing king? of the Merovingian dynasty.[4] Pepin replaced Adalgisel as mayor of the palace of Austrasia in 639 but died the following year, in 640, and was replaced by his son Grimoald.

Born: in 651 in Neustrie, son of Clovis II, King de Bourgogne and Sainte Bathilde. Some sources assert that Thierry III was born in 651 while others claim it was circa 654. Note - between 673 and 690: Thierri III became King of Neustrie upon the death of Clotaire III between 10 March and 15 May 673. The Crown was given him by Ebroin, Major Domo. It is Ebroin's excesses which caused the Greats [Optimates] to rebel in 674 and to call upon Childeric II, King of Austrasia for help. Thierri III was de-throned in 674 by Childeric II who died in 675 allowing Thierri III to re-claim the throne. In 674, he was shaven and relegated to Saint-Denis. Ebroin was exiled to the Monastery of Luxeuil [Haute-Saone]. In 676, Thierry III left Saint-Denis to become King of Neustria and of Burgundy with the help of Major Domo Leger. Ebroin, however, first supports Clotaire III, a son of Clovis III, and then he swings to Thierry III.

Thierry III for his part is first and foremost King of Neustria and of Burgundy and the Greats [Optimates] of Austrasia want a King of their own. Thus, they find Dagobert II, son of Sigebert III, who had been exiled in Ireland. For all practical purposes, Dagobert II is King of Austrasia, whereas Ebroin rules Neustria and Burgundy in the name of Thierry III. By 680, through the death in 679 of Dagobert II, Thierry III is sole King of Gaule. But in reality the antagonism between the Neustrians and the Austrasians was quite aggravated. Austrasia is at that time governed by the grandson of Pepin de Landen, Pepin II, who makes himself Duke of Austrasia, supported by his brother Martin. In the Summer of 680, the two armies join in battle at Leucofao [known today as Bois-du-Fay] in the Ardennes. The Austrasians are defeated and Pepin escapes. Martin is taken prisoner in Laon, where he had sought refuge. Ebroin had promised to let him live, and of course, he rushed to have him executed. Within 3 years Ebroin is himself assassinated by one Ermenfroy who takes refuge in Austrasia. In 687, Pepin II with the help of the Greats [Optimates] of Neustria, invades Neustria from the North-East. Though Thierry III was vanquished at the Battle of Tertry [three leagues from Saint-Quentin] by Pepin II, the latter still recognized Thierry III as King of Neustrie. Married before 674: Amalberge, daughter of Wandregisis and Farahild. Died: between March 691 and April 691.

Thierry III died in March or April, and his son Clovis IV succeeds him, though he is barely 9 years of age. Thus, Pepin II [Pepin of Herstal] remains the true ruler.

Dagobert II (Latin: Dagober(c)tus; Old English: D?gberht; died 679) was a Merovingian king of the Franks, ruling in Austrasia from 675 or 676 until his death. He is one of the more obscure Merovingians. He has been considered a martyr since at least the ninth century.

None of the narrative histories of the Merovingian period give an account of Dagobert's reign, which must be reconstructed from several different sources. Upon the death of his father in 656, he was deprived of the succession and exiled to Ireland to live as a monk. His return to Austrasia was arranged by Wilfrid, bishop of York. He ascended the throne following the assassination of his cousin in 675. During his brief reign he made war on the neighbouring Frankish kingdom of Neustria, signed a peace treaty with the Lombard Kingdom in Italy and reintroduced gold coinage.

The only near-contemporary assessment of Dagobert's character portrays him as a tyrant. He antagonized the bishops and imposed new taxes. He was assassinated by a conspiracy of the highest nobility. He was succeeded by his cousin, Theuderic III, king of Neustria, against whom he had previously warred.

When Bereswinde's husband Eticho (Adalrich) found his daughter Odilia was reputedly born blind, which Adalrich took as a punishment for some offence done to God, he tried to persuade his wife Bereswinda to kill the infant child in secret. She instead sent the child into hiding with a maid at the monastery of Palma. According to the Life of Odilia, a bishop named Erhard baptised the adolescent girl and smeared a chrism on her eyes, which miraculously restored her sight.

The bishop tried to restore the duke's relationship with his daughter, but Adalrich, fearing the effect of admitting to having a daughter hiding in poverty in a monastery would have on his subjects, refused. A son of his, ignoring Adalrich's orders, brought his sister back to Hohenburg, where Adalrich was holding court. When Odilia arrived, Adalrich, in a rage, struck a blow with his sceptre to his son's head, accidentally killing him. Disgraced, he reluctantly allowed Odilia to live in the monastery, which had no abbess, with a minimal wage under a British nun.
