• Notes

  Merovech was the son of King Chilperic of Soissons by one of his firstwives. His father ordered him to march on Poitiers, but he instead wentto Tours, took the city, and married Brunhild, the widow of his lateuncle King Sigebert of Metz. Chilperic was very angry, and the two agreedto separate while in Rouen. There in Rouen, Chilperic and Merovech droveout Clovis (Chilperic's son) and Queen Fredegund (Chilperic's wife),taking the city. Merovech was put in the custody of his father and wasmade a priest to Le Mans. He instead returned to Tours seeking sanctuaryfrom his father. Chilperic found out and Merovech fled the city toChampagne. In 578, Merovech again sought sanctuary in Tours but waskilled on the order of his father.
