      EARLDOM OF WORCESTER (IV, 1) 1449

      JOHN (TIPTOFT), 2nd LORD TIPTOFT, only son and heir of John (TIPTOFT), 1st LORD TiPTOFT (so created by writ 1426), by his 2nd wife, Joyce, younger daughter and coheir of Edward (CHERLETON), 5th LORD CHERLETON, feudal LORD OF POWIS, was born May 1427, perhaps at Great Eversden, co. Cambridge; educated at Oxford (University College), 1440-43; succeeded his father in the Barony of Tiptoft, 27 January 1442/3, and his mother, 22 September 1446, having licence to enter into his lands, 20 July 1447, while still a minor. He was created by patent (wherein he is called "Johannes baro et dominus Tiptot et de Powys"), 16 July 1449, EARL OF WORCESTER. Treasurer of England (at the age of 24), 15 April 1452-March 1454/5; P.C. in or before 1453; was appointed, with others, to keep the seas, 3 April 1454-30 July 1455; a Commissioner, 13 April 1454, to invest Prince Edward as Prince of Wales. As Joint Ambassador to Pope Calixtus III, 5 August 1457, and to Pope Pius II, 16 May 1459, he went to Italy early in the next year and joined a pilgrimage from Venice to Jerusalem, 17 May--6 September 1458. Thereafter he lived at Padua till 1461, in which year he visited Rome, and returned to England by 1 September 1461, when he reached Canterbury. By Edward IV he was made Keeper of Weybridge and Sapley Forests, co. Huntingdon, 10 July and 28 November 1461; Chief Justice of North Wales, 25 November 1461-28 August 1467; Constable of the Tower of London for life, 2 December 1461, and Joint Constable, with John, Lord Dudley, 18 February 1467/8; Constable of England, 7 February 1461/2-August 1467, in the execution of which office he earned the name of "Butcher of England"; Joint Ambassador to treat with the Earl of Ross [SCT], 8 February 1461/2, and with Brittany, 12 August 1464. K.G. 21 March 1461/2; again Treasurer of England, 14 April 1462-June 1463; Constable of Porchester Castle, 28 August 1462-November 1467; was at the sieges of Bamburgh Castle and Dunstanburgh Castle, in Northumberland, December 1462; Lord Steward of the Household after the Earl of Kent (who died 9 January 1462/3); was retained to go to sea on the King's service, 7 August 1463; Chancellor of Ireland for life, 31 January 1463/4. As Deputy Lieutenant of Ireland for the Duke of Clarence, appointed 11 May 1465, he resigned or sold his English offices in 1467 and crossed to Ireland in September of that year. There he presided at the Parliament [IRL] held in Dublin, 11 December, and Drogheda, 23 December 1467-3 November 1468, in which the Earls of Kildare and Desmond were attainted, the latter being beheaded, 14 February 1467/8. Returning to England, he remained loyal to Edward IV at the time of Warwick's and Clarence's rebellion, being re-appointed Constable of England, 14 March 1469/70; Lieutenant ot Ireland, 23 March, Chamberlain of the Exchequer, 30 April, and Treasurer of England, 10 July 1470. On the King's flight to Flanders, September following, Tiptoft, who was unable to join him, took refuge in Weybridge Forest, where he was taken prisoner and sent up to London. He was arraigned and condemned of high treason before the newly-appointed Constable of England, John, 13th Earl of Oxford, 15 October, and beheaded 18 October 1470 on Tower Hill. No record of any attainder or of his son's restoration has been found.

      He married, 1stly (licence 3 April 1449), Cecily, widow of Henry (DE BEAUCHAMP), DUKE OF WARWICK (died 11 June 1446), 2nd daughter of Richard (NEVILLE), EARL OF SALISBURY, by Alice, suo jure, COUNTESS OF SALISBURY, daughter and heir of Thomas (MONTAGU), 4th EARL OF SALISBURY. She, by whom he had no issue, died 28 July 1450 and was buried 31 July in Tewkesbury Abbey. He married, 2ndly, after 10 June 1451, Elizabeth, widow of Reynold [WEST] 6th LORD LA WARRE [died 27 August 1450), daughter and heir of Robert GREYNDOUR, of Mitcheldean and Abinghall, co. Gloucester, Aston Ingham, co. Hereford, &c., by Joan, daughter and heir of Thomas RUGGE, or RIGGE, of Charlcombe, Somerset. She, who was aged 23 in 1443/4, died s.p.s. in childbirth 1 September 1452. He married, 3rdly, circa September 1467, at Ludlow, Salop, Elizabeth, widow of Sir Roger CORBET, of Moreton Corbet, Salop (died shortly before 16 June 1467), sister and heir of Walter HOPTON, of Hopton, Salop, daughter of Thomas HOPTON, of the same, by Eleanor, sister and (in her issue) coheir of Sir William Lucy, of Newington, Kent, and Richard's Castle, co. Hereford, daughter of Sir Walter Lucy, of the same. He died intestate 18 October 1470, aged 43, and was buried in the Church of the Black Friars by Ludgate. M.I. there. Effigy (with two of his wives) and monument in Ely Cathedral. His widow married, 3rdly, before 7 December 1471, as his 2nd wife, Sir William STANLEY, K.G. (younger brother of Thomas, 1st EARL OF DERBY), who was found guilty of treason for his support of Perkin Warbeck and beheaded, 16 February 1494/5, on Tower Hill. She died 22 June 1498.
